Wuthering Heights Timeline

  • Chapter One

    Lockwood visits the manor (Wuthering Heights) of Mr. Heathcliff, who leaves him in a room full of dogs that try to attack him. Talk about good first impressions.
  • Chapter Two

    Lockwood visits Wuthering Heights again, but he gets snowed into the house by a blizzard.
  • Chapter Three

    While staying at Wuthering Heights during a bilzzard, Lockwood finds an old journal that belonged to Catherine Earnshaw.
  • Chapter Four

    Lockwood's house keeper, Nelly, tells him about how she used to work at Wuthering Heights under her first mistress, Catherine, the mother of the Catherine he saw the day before at Wuthering Heights.
  • Chapter Five

    In this chapter Nelly explains to Lockwood that Heathcliff is adopted-kind of. She says that one day, a very long time ago, Heathcliff's "father" we on a trip to Liverpool, coming back with the orphan gypsy that is Heathcliff as a child.
  • Chapter Five Cont.

    Mr. Earnshaw, the father of Catherine, Hindley, and Heathcliff(kind of) dies, and the ownership of Wuthering Heights goes to Hindley, the oldest sibling.
  • Chapter Six

    When Catherine gets bitten by their neighbors dog, Hindley, the older brother, thinks that it was Heathcliff's fault and declares that Heathcliff can't have any further contact with Catherine.
  • Chapter Nine

    Hearing that Catherine is marrying another man, Heathcliff runs away from Wuthering Heights before he can hear that she loves him more than anything.
  • Chapter Ten

    Back in the present, Lockwood becomes sick in bed for a month and demands that Nelly tells him the rest of the story. Heathcliff also comes to visit.
  • Chapter Fifteen

    Edgar catches Heathcliff talking to Catherine in her room, before she collapses. Heathcliff gives Catherine to Edgar, saying that he should look after her before getting angry at him.
  • Chapter Sixteen

    Catherine gives birth to her daughter two months early, and dies right after.
  • Chapter Seventeen

    Hindley, the oldest brother and owner of Wuthering Heights, dies in a huge debt to Heathcliff, meaning that he now owns the property.
  • Chapter Eighteen

    Young Catherine, Catherine and Edgar's daughter, is raised without any knowledge of Wuthering Heights until, when she is thirteen, Edgar has to leave to go somewhere. She escapes her house and ends up at Wuthering Heights, where she meets Hareton, Hindley's son, and immediately becomes friends with him.
  • Chapter Twenty-Seven

    Heathcliff locks Catherine and Nelly in a room until she agrees to marry Linton.
  • Chapter Twenty-Eight

    Catherine and Linton are now married, and Edgar's health is still slowly declining, and everyone fears that he will die very soon.
  • Chapter Twenty-Eight Cont.

    Later in Chapter 28, Edgar dies, thinking that Catherine is happily married instead of being forced.
  • Chapter Thirteen

    Catherine locks herself in her room after her husband, Edgar, demands that she choose between himself and Heathcliff, whom she still loves. She becomes sick and Nelly nurses her back to almost full health for two months. When she is better, Catherine realizes that she is pregnant.
  • Chapter Twenty-four

    Catherine is spending more and more time with Linton, Heathcliff's son, in secret. When Hareton finds them talking during the night, he bullies and sends Linton to the attic. The next day Linton blames Catherine for his humiliation, and she says that she will never talk to him again, and he asks for forgiveness. She tells this Nelly, who tells Edgar about their meetings. He immediately forbids them from meeting at night anymore, but says that he will let Linton visit their home.
  • Chapter Twenty-Five

    Back in present time, Nelly tells Lockwood that the this only happened a year ago, and that she is worried that Lockwood will fall in love with Catherine, now that her husband, Linton, is dead.
  • Chapter Thirty

    Nelly isn't allowed on Wuthering Heights, only to keep her place at Thrushcross Grange. Her only info source about Catherine is Zilliah, the house keeper. Catherine has been taking care of Linton every day, but he has died.
  • Chapter Thirty-Four

    Heathcliff descends into madness, only eating one meal a day and going for long walks at night, coming back in a wildly happy mood. He tells Nelly that he has seen heaven and reminds her of his burial wishes-to be buried next to Catherine. Nelly later finds him dead. She tells Lockwood that Catherine and Hareton will marry on New Years Eve.
