All the fun had on June 19, 2018, Gateway Writing Project

  • 2018 BCE

9:45 a.m. Scribe Time led by Jenny

Competitiveness kicked in as small groups led by Jenny worked a google digital breakout about yesterday. A race to the finish line!
  • 10:45 a.m. A moment to reflect

Offering feedback is one of the many great things about this class; we learn while we plan, while we teach, and after we teach!
  • 11:00 a.m. Genre Transformation

Laughing, researching, writing, and a little bit of munching all happened simultaneously while we partnered up to transform Wikipedia articles into various genres from THE LIST.
  • 11:30 a.m. Tracy disappeared

Where did she go? Sioux remained calm. Will she be gone for the rest of the day?
  • 1:00 p.m. Sharing out

Perhaps a highlight of the day, pairs of authors shared their genre transformations. Glittens, and girdles, lipstick and leis; this group is talented.
  • 2:20 p.m. The Crit

In the art world, our feedback form might be called a "crit." Yes, we all have to think a little bit, but we are all happy to work together and share our thoughts.
  • 9:30 a.m. Writing Prompt

Craig put on a leadership hat as he offered the writing prompt for the day. We even had props as our muses!
  • 10:00 a.m. Teacher Demo by Amanda

Amanda led us in a creative writing lesson that not only teaches the writing skills necessary for AP Lang classes, but also teases out some self-awareness and compassion via the topic of suffering.
  • 12:20 p.m. The grilling of an instructor

I am happy to report that Sioux has a seemingly unending supply of clarification in that head (and heart) of hers. Questions were asked, questions were answered. Calmness followed.
  • 1:30 p.m. Jenny's Teacher Demo

Cross-curricular instruction at its best, Jenny waded gracefully into The Holocaust with us. Such thoughtful topics today! Jenny squeezed several thought-provoking activities into 45 minutes that flew by. I think we all get a little excited when we see colorful Post-it notes. :)
  • 2:30 p.m. A Random Autobiography

Not unlike this very timeline, Sioux shared her random autobiography with us. We felt the fabric of her life so clearly in her words.
  • 2:45 p.m. Write, write, write

We decided as a class to use our precious 30 minutes of found time to start our own autobiographies, work on whatever pieces are squeaking most loudly, and leave whenever we decided. If only we were all enclosed in a 16-day bubble while our lives sat contently on shelves... See you tomorrow :).
