In 692, China retook western border lands from the Tibet after defeating Tibetan forces at Kashgar. In 763 Tibet seized the Tang Chinese capital of city of Chang'an.

    Martin Luther creates 95 theses during the reformation. Theses against selling indulgences. Points on three things. Selling indulgences to fund the church is wrong. The Pope has no power over Purgatory. Buying indulgences gives the people false sense of security and endangers their salvation.

    While in Soviet airspace, a United Space U-2 spy plane was shot down. Francis Gary Powers was the pilot of the spy plane. Powers was ejected but parachuted safely to the ground and was captured by KGB. The plane crashed but parts of it was collected and put in display in Moscow.

    The Bay of Pigs was when 1400 Cuban exiles launched an invasion on the south side of Cuba. The Bay of Pigs was intended to provoke popularity for an uprising againt Fidel Castro. But instead of provoking popilarity for an uprising against him, it gave him a military victory. Fidel Castro came to power when an armed revolt that overthrew dictator Fulgencia Batista.

    Nearing the age of 80, Mao Zedong died after suffering Parkinson's disease. He had ruled the Chinese Communist Party from 1935 up until his death, he was also the chairman of the party until his death. In his lifetime, Mao Zedong killed over 50 million people.

    Park Chung-hee Assassination
    Park Chung-hee was a South Korean president and ruled from December 17, 1963 up until his assassination in October 26, 1979. Park was assassinated at a dinner by his CIA director, Kim Jae-kyu at the KCIA annex in the Cheong Wa Dae compound. He was 62 years old and was buried at the Seoul National Cemetery.

    Chinese officials counted 1,008,175,288 people on the mainland. 80 percent of the population still lived in the countryside. One in every four Chinese people in the population is illiterate, that is a total of 235.8 people.

    Starting on September 17 and lasting until October 2, the Seoul Summer Olympics had over 8,000 participants. 159 different countries participated in the Olympics that year and 27 events were held. The Soviet Union took first place above the rest of the teams with a total of 132 medals, the closest country to them was East Germany with 102. Matt Biondi from the United States had the most total medals with 7, 5 of them gold.

    Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty ending 46 years of war against each other. The signing was watched by US President Bill Clinton and was broadcast on television. Around 60 percent of the population in Jordan were made up of Palestinians, who were angered and shocked by the treaty because they believed that their government failed to address their grievances.

    The earthquake that struck Sichuan Province had a strength of 7.9 on the Richter scale. 20,000 people were reported dead and approximately 100,000 people injured. Around 10 million people were affected by the earthquake. It caused landslides, flattened whole cities and took whole buildings out.

    21 men and one woman were accused of plotting of attempting to create a new state which would be called Great Vietnam Kingdom. The group's leader, Phan Van Thu, would have been the king of Great Vietnam Kingdom. Phan Van Thu is facing life behind bars and the rest of the people convicted are facing charges from 10 to 17 years in prison.
