In 1035 William's father died while returning from a pilgramage to Jerusalem . At only 8 years old, William became the new duke of Normady, France.

William was promised the English throne by childless king Edward the Confesor. But in 1066 when he died his brother-in-law, Harold, claimed the throne, and William accpeted betrayal with a plan in mind.

William assembled a fleet and an army on the southern French coast but due to winds the attack was delayed. Meanwhile Harold (who was planning for the attack) had to quickly moved North to defend from the Norwegians.

Harold marched back down to meet William (without rest). When he and his two brothers were killed noone wanted to make a new army so William's path was clear to the throne.

After defeating Harold at the battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror was crowned king of England on Christmas day in 1066.

William died on Spetember 8, 1087 after suffering internal bleeding from a accidental stab when his horse got scared.
