• The Cotton Mission was initiated in the state of Utah. Mormon leaders were able to establish an agriculture colony in Harmony, Utah. The Cotton Mission is known as an investigation to determine if Cotton could be grown.

  • The Harmony missionaries petitioned to the territorial legislature. They petitioned to send a company of 150 men to establish cotton plantations and vineyards.

  • There was a possibility of success for the Utah community regarding the Cotton Mission. Even though they grew within limited amounts, there were able to receive Cotton, which was their main goal.

  • By this time, the territorial legislative community was able to report that "cotton was not impracticable." Matters about the Cotton mission being a success and it will enable the state of Utah to supply itself without importation.

  • Salt Lake City jobbers and whole sales faced a difficulty with railroads. Railroad rates have become expensive for routes coming from the East to Salt Lake.

  • Two Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) traveled to Salt Lake City for a 7 day hearing of a case that was called; "Commercial Club, Traffic Bureau of Salt Lake City vs. Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad Company and others."

  • A petition was presented to President William Howard Taft by Utah Congressman and Senators. The petition had 3,500 signatures in protest to "unjust, grossly discriminatory and despotic rates."

  • ICC released it's decision regarding the case between SLC and Topeka, Santa Fe Railroads. In which the results were "there is nothing to justify the maintenance of abnormal rates" for Railroads.
