Watts of Wind

  • Invented our projects idea.

We wanted to do something along the lines of saving energy, so we pondered upon the a windmill. This was the birth of our project.
  • Researched we researched the topic of the windmill.

  • Gathering materials

    Gathering materials
On this date we gathered materials, to build our windmill and to test it we needed
    -a foot of PVC pipe
-and old airplane motor (or some sort of turbine)
    -about three feet of wire
    -a resistor
-something to mount everything on (preferably about a 12x20+ piece of plywood)
    -a large fan
  • Constructing the Windmill

    Constructing the Windmill
Building the actual windmill was tricky. We had to mount an old airplane motor on top of some PVC pipe. Then we ran the wires down the pipe and connected them to a voltmeter.
  • Testing the windmill

    Testing the windmill
To test the windmill we recorded what the voltmeter said. We did this three different times and averaged out the results. We put the windmill different distances away to demonstrate different wind speeds because our fan couldn't generate wind fast enough. Overall we ran 24 different tests. 12 of them were recorded with the small propellor and the other 12 were recorded with the large propellor.
  • Organizing data

After running the tests we had to turn in our raw and graphed data. We recorded the raw data as we tested the windmill and then typed it later. The graphed data however was more tricky, since I barely know how to use a computer, I ended up typing the numbers along the sides of the graph, then I printed it, then I drew the lines on.
  • Writing the conclusion

In the conclusion we summed up our results and formed them into a paragraph. Then we typed it up with the rest of our results and glued it on the board
  • Making the board

We used a typical trifold board to display our whole project and mounted all of our information on it along with four pictures. This was due on the day of the science fair.
