    During the presidency of James Madison, war was declared between the United States and the British Empire. This war became known as the War of 1812. The Americans declared war with the British Empire because of a desire to expand into the Northwest Territory and because of trade problems resulting from Britain's war against France. "The Star-Spangled Banner" was written during one of the battles in Baltimore.

  • Battle of Queenston Heights

    Battle of Queenston Heights - Brock is killed, Americans are repelled.

    Americans Capture York.
  • Battle of Stoney Creek

    British attack Americans at night and stop the Americans from capturing Hamilton and the Western half of Lake Ontario.
  • The Battle of the Thames

    Near present-day Chatham, Ontario in Upper Canada. It resulted in the death of the Shawnee chief Tecumseh, and the destruction of the Native American coalition which he led.
  • The Capture of Fort Niagara

    The Capture of Fort Niagara took place late in 1813, during the War of 1812 between Great Britain and the United States. The understrength American garrison was taken by surprise, and the fort was captured in a night assault by a select force of British regular infantry.

    Another American force landed nearby and again captured Fort Erie. The U.S. Army used the fort as a supply base and expanded its size. At the end of July, after the Battles of Chippewa and Lundy’s Lane, the American army withdrew to Fort Erie and were besieged by the British.

It was one of the bloodiest battles of the war, and one of the deadliest battles ever fought on Canadian soil.
