    Terror of Europe 793-800

    Begins with the attack on Lindisfarne monastery in 793. A Scandinavian expedition sacked the monastery as well as nearby villages on the coast of northern England.

    Invading Europe 800-850

    In 799 they attacked Brittany, in 834 the Low Countries and in 844 the Mediterranean coast. The first stay of the Vikings in Spain was in 844.

    Conquering lands 850-900

    In the year 850, the Danes attacked England during the summer and spent the winter in camps. In the year 866 they conquered the capital of Northumbria, Eoferwic (modern York).
    The Norwegians controlled Ireland from 853 thanks to alliances with local kings and founded Dublin.

    Christianization 900-980

    Viking attacks in France makes the Viking leader Rollo, who had attacked Paris in 855, convert to Christianity and become Duke of Normandy in the service of the French king.
    The Vikings are dispossessed of their bases on the Loire in the year 931, the successive attacks on French territory did not have the force or success of before.

    The end of the vikings 980-1100

    Erik the Red explores and colonizes Greenland since 982.
    Prince Vladimir I of Kyiv is baptized in the year 988. The Icelandic Assembly, for this part, agrees on the official conversion in the year 1000.
    Cnut the Great is also proclaimed King of England in 1016, after invading England.
