    During the Battle of Tours in 732, the two opposing teams were the Christians and Muslims. The Christians wanted the muslims to stop coming into Europe. After the battle, the Franks won. Some argued that if Charlemagne were to have failed, there would not be as much force on the muslims to protect Western Europe.

    Middle Class Formed
    In the year 1000, the merchants, traders, and artisans all came together to form the middle class. This class was between the lower(peasants) and higher(nobles.) The other classes despised this class because they thought that lending money, and trading was immoral, especially the Christian clergy.

    In 768, Charles Martel became the king of France. He also built an empire across most of Europe, while briefly united them. He later became known as Charlemagne or Charles the Great. His conquests of other empires reunited most of the western Roman Empire.

    Charlemagne being crowned emperor was important because his kingdom was recognized by the Pope as the largest empire in Europe since the Roman Empire. Once he had his empire, he expanded and the France state he founded is called the Carolingian Empire.

    This was obviously a very important time because a great ruler died. He was very healthy until the last four years of his life when he suffered from severe fevers and had a limp. In 813, he gave the reign to his son Louis as co-emperor until Charlemagne would pass. When Charles died at the age of 71, Louis took full power and his empire took most of western Europe.

    Otto was crowned Emperor of Rome in 962 and was known as a ferocious fighter and shrewd politician. In 951, Otto invaded Italy and he allowed the king to still run Italy, however under his rules. This shows that although Otto would defeat other empires and conquer them, he was still reasonable. At the end of Otto’s reign, he became known as the first of the Holy roman emperors and the most powerful ruler of Europe in his time.
