    All the events that are on this timeline had an effect to some degree on East Asia whether it be change in the government, economy, or the overall lifestyle of the East Asian people. *The month and day are not accurate, however the years are.
  • Imperialism in Asia

    Imperialism in Asia
    This lasted over a course of fifty years (1792-1868) and had the spread of ideas passed from other powers to Asia. For example, Euopean ideas and education had an influence on the views peoples in southeast and eastern Asia; China, where modernizers were undermining the authority of the Qing (AP book). The imperial views of Europe were being spread into East Asia. A response to this is the Meiji Restoration in Japan (1868-1894). *The month and day are not accurate, however the years are.

    Japan Confronts China
    Japan became one of the greater powers in the world around the nineteenth; the other was the United States. Japan greatly changed from 1750-1900 because of this. It became known in the world. As Japan grew strong, China became a very weak country and later went into war in 1894. Japan started wanted control over certain areas in China and confronted China (1800-1900). Basically, China became weaker and Japan grew strong, ranking over China.

    The Arrow War was a contribution that lead to the decline of the Qing Empire. With this tieing into the Opium War and China being hit hard by European western influence, China began to decline and grew weak in their economy, government, and military.

    The Opium War (1839-1850) broke out when negotiations with Qing and British representitives basically stopped. The AP book described the Qing Empire as "hopelessly obsolete" because they don't have much of an army to fight with. In 1842, the Treaty of Nanking was made, dismantling the Canton system, an older system. As a result of the Opium Wars, East Asia opened new treaty ports and cities were now open to new foreign residents. *The month and day are not accurate, however the year is.

    The western influence (1850-1900) hit East Asia (Japan and China) very hard in 1850; however, both countries responded very opposite of each other. China ignored and resisted the influence which made their government and economy very weak. However, Japan took on the influence and became a strong industrial power and had strong military power. It's all on the perspective of the country.

    Due to the Taiping Rebellion, China was taken advatage of by the French and British. They did this by demanding that treaty ports be open where they could trade at will (AP book). China was basically a pushover because they were so weak since they resisted western imperialism. This put China in turmoil (1850-1917) for a number of years. They grew weaker and couldn't do much about it.

    The Taiping Rebellion
    The Taiping Rebellion (1851-1864) was "the inflammatory mixture of social unhappiness and foreign intrusion" which caused a civil war in East Asia (AP book). It was ranked the world's bloodiest civil war and it had the greatest armed conflicts before the time of the twentieth century. The Taiping Rebellion affect the agricultural centers of China and the cities of East Asia. *The month and day are not accurate, however the year is.

    1862-1895: French conquer Indochina
    1865-1876: Russian forces advance into Central Asia
    1878: United States obtains Pago Pago Harbor (Samoa)
    1885: Britain completes conquest of Burma
    1894-1895: China defeated in Sino-Japanese War
    1895: France completes conquest of Indochina
    1899-1902: U.S. forces conquer and occupy Philippines
    1903: Russia completes Trans-siberian Railway
    1904-1905: Russia deafeated in Russo-Japanese War

    Decentralization at the End of the Qing Empire
    The decentralization of the Qing Empire (1864-1875) was caused before the Taiping Rebellion started. Before 1850, the Qing Empire had a bad economy and was in great debt. When the Taiping Rebellion took place, it only added to the bad economy and made things worse. After 1860, the Qing Empire broke down into many large power zones. These were ruled/governed through "provincial governors" that passed on the leadership role. *The month and day are not accurate, however the years are.

    The Meiji Restoration and the Modernization of Japan
    The Meiji Restoration (1868-1894) was when "provincial rebels overthrew the Tokugawa Shogunate and declared you emperor Mutsuhito 'restored'" (AP book). "Meiji Restoration" was the new name that these rebels called their political rule. The point of this group was to protect its country from western imperialism. Likewise, the Meiji leaders had created a form of government structure close to imperial Germany (AP book). *The month and day are not accurate, however the years are.
