  • Plantation System

    The plantation system was a system where wealthy farmers would buy slaves and force them to work on there farm. These slaves were unpaid and treated badly.
  • Factories

    Factories made it possible to produce products in mass quantities. Producers could then market this product and make money. This lead us to today where we have factories producing things such as cars, tv's, phones, etc.

    Francis Cabot Lowell helped create the Lowell mills. He was a leading figure in improving the milling industry.

    Henry Clay was an american politician and slave owner back in the 1700 and 1800's
  • Cotton Gin

    The cotton gin greatly increased the rate at which farmers could process cotton. This made major progress to getting towards the modern era of farming we know today.
  • Interchangeable Parts

    Interchangeable parts made it so that people would be able to swap parts out on any machine with a standardized part. This made huge improvements to the milling industry at the time.
  • Sectionalism

    Sectionalism is when two groups split off into separate sections. This is similar to what happened with the North and South during the Civil War. Both sides wanted different things and this created conflict.
  • Spoils System

    The Spoils System is a practice where after a political party wins they give there extra jobs to there friends and supporters. This creates conflict because it's not fair.
  • Nativism

    Nativism: This is the policy of protecting the interests of the natives.
  • Railroads

    The railroad helped people cross great distances over land at high speeds. This helped progress us to modern day transportation which is becoming more and more advanced every day.
  • Erie Canal

    This massive canal helped to connect northern america with the rest of the ocean. It made them an economic powerhouse and created many of the cities we know today. One being NYC. This helped progress the USA to becoming a world power today.

    Lowell Girls

    The Lowell Girls were the girls who worked on the Lowell mills. These were some of the first women to work and earn money. This helped create today's women's rights where everyone is equal.
  • Indian Removal Act

    The Indian Removal Act was when president Jackson wanted to relocate the natives and he wanted them to be moved out west so that they could take there land. This created a major conflict between Jackson and the natives.
  • Mechanical Reaper

    The mechanical reaper made it possible to mechanically collect crops. So, one person could do a large section of field rapidly.
  • Steel Plow

    The Steel Plow was used in farming and it helped to speed up the time it took to plow fields. This greatly increased the amount of food you could produce and lowered the overall cost of the food.
  • Telegraph

    The telegraph was the predecessor to the telephone which greatly increased the ability to talk to one another across long distances.

    Trail of Tears

    The Trail of Tears was a time when the Indians were being relocated and they had to walk on a trail. This trail was filled with hardships and this caused major turmoil and massive loss to the natives.
  • Lowell Mill

    For the first time ever women were allowed to work and make money. This was a huge step towards today's women's rights. These mills were not the best run and did have hazardous dangers.
  • Sewing Machine

    The sewing machine made it possible to produce clothes and other cloth involving items rapidly. This greatly progressed the "fashion" industry and people began to buy clothes rather than produce them themselves.

    The Underground Railroad

    The Underground Railroad was a system used by slaves to escape from there masters and try to go to the free north. This undermined the entire slave system and helped make everyone equal in the long run.
