  • The Meiji Restoration

    A political revolution broke out which resulted in the restoration of the power of the empower. This victory marked the victory of the "Westernizers" and "Modernizers". This transformed Japan into a modern state by creating a central administration, forming a modern army, modernizing Japanese textile. This event is significant in understanding how Japan started to emerge as a world power.
  • Berlin West Africa Conference

    This conference was held to mediate the complex situation in Congo. The Conference concluded that central Africa was a free trade zone, and that religious missions and scientific research was to be protected. The conference also concluded that the slave trade was to be banned, and that nations had to inform others when they occupied an area. This is significant in understanding the impact of imperial expansion on international relations. It caused competition , so agreements had to be signed.
  • Discovery of Gold in the Transvaal

    The economic significance of the Transvaal grew after the discovery of gold. British prospectors poured in over the next five years. The population of the Transvaal posed a threat to supremacy of the Boer population. Cecil Rhodes launched an unsuccessful attempt yo overthrow the Boer government in 1895. This is significant in understanding what the impact of imperial expansion was on international relations. It caused tension, because of competition for land.

    There was an ongoing tension between America and South-America, after America implemented a tariff on Cuban Sugar. The yellow-press in America instigated the situation between America and South-America through many new articles. After the Maine blew up in Havana Harbor, the public and congress pushed to declare war with Spain. This is significant in understanding why the USA emerged as a world power. They gained gained land from the war with Spain which would eventually help their economy.
  • The Fashoda Crises

    The Fashoda Crises was a competition between Britain and France where they competed to control the Sudan. The British moved troops from Egypt to the Sudan, which the French saw as their first step in the reconquest of Sudan. The French wanted to control the Upper Nile and Fashoda to gain access to Egypt's vital water supplies. This is significant in understanding why imperialism was a significant force in the late nineteenth century . It provided nations with prospective economy growth.
  • The Boxer Rebellion

    The Boxer Rebellion was a patriotic and populist reaction to increase of imperialism in China. The 'Boxers United in Righteousness' were anti- Christian, and anti-imperialism. On June 20th China declared war on the foreign powers imperializing it, with the support and loyalty of the Boxers. This event is significant on what the impact of imperial expansion had on international relations. Many Chinese started to resent the imperial powers, thus declaring war on them.
  • Anglo-Japanese Treaty

    Japan and Britain negotiated a defensive allice to protect both of their imperial interests. Japan recognized Britain's interests in China, while Britain accepted Japans commercial, political, and economical interests in Korea. The treaty established that in the vent of war each side would remain neutral, unless a third-party got involved. This is significant in understanding the impact of Japan's emergence as a world power. Japan formed treaties and alliances to strengthen their position.
  • Entente Cordiale

    The Entente Cordiale was multiple agreements between Britain and France that were signed. The agreement established that France recognized Britain's position in Egypt, and Britain would not object France obtaining law and order in Morocco. German intervention in Morocco drove Britain and France closer. This was not an alliance. This is significant in understanding how imperial expansion caused some nations to form agreements with each other, that would benefit both.
  • Russo-Japanese War

    Japan did not accept Russian domination of Manchuria.They wanted to expand their sphere of influence there. It became clear that Russia would not withdraw troops from Manchuria and cede to Japan. Japan launched a surprise attack on Port Arthur, and was confident doing so because of their agreement with Britain. This is significant in understanding the impact that imperial expansion had on international relations. It caused tension because nations now competed for land.
  • Wilson's 14 points proposed

    When giving a speech to congress, former President Wilson proclaimed how the USA was a nation of peace, and wanted peace. The Fourteen Points would outline how there would be "no annexations. no contributions, and no punitive damage on the side of the US. Germany asked for armistice on the basis of the Fourteen Points. This is significant in understanding what the emergence of the USA as a world power had on international relations. It made it know the US would pursue an isolationist policy.
