Trading first started in Ghana. Ghana had a lot of gold. Berbers and Almoravids were traders from north Africa. They traded salt, peacock feathers, clothes and weapons for gold.The Ghanians and the traders could not talk to each other as they speaked diffrent language so they had to use silent bata.

After a while, one of the traders, Amloravids, put a new religion in Ghana. The Ghanian leader, which was called Wagadudu, didn't follow this religion. The Almoravids relised this and attacked Ghana. The Ghanian Empire fell.

After Ghanas downfall, a new Empire came to replace Ghana, Mali.

Mali had a rich kingdom just like Ghana. Mali's king, Mansa Musa was known to cross the Sahara desert and take 500 men carrying solid golden staff's. Mansa Musa gave away the golden staff's to oter kingdoms.

Mansa Musa traded to much gold in the capital of Egypt, Cairo, that it became less valuable and no one wanted gold any more. That was th end of Mali's king.

As Mali's trade weakond, Songhai took over Mali and it's trade. So Songhai became the new trade route.

Songhai coaght fish. They were the first traders to trade fish. So Songhai traded fish,nut's, slaves and salt for goods.

Mansa Musa made Timbuctu the capital of Mali. Instead of gold, they traded salt and education now, Timbuktu was also in the middle of a trade route. When the Portugese came to Timbuktu, they figurd out a new faster route past Timbuktu, which travelers cc

Songhai was soon over ruled by a man named Sunni Ali. Songai had a diffrent relgion to other cities. Sunni Ali was not a devout Muslim, and attaced Songhai.
