Timeline #2--Family and Education

By thorvig
  • Born

  • High School Graduation

I graduated with a class of 63--many of whom I'd gone to Kindergarten with! I was an intentional under-achiever in high school--I did not want to be compared to my straight-A student older brother.

This was a great experience for me. Education isn't always an equal opportunity in England. There are different expectations of women than men. Those these might be different than things are in the US, if it works for their society, then so be it. Just because we live a certain way doesn't mean that other ways are bad if they work for those people.

  • Son #1 born

We moved from Missouri to Maryland when I was pregnant, and I never really went back to work after we'd moved. I stayed home for 5 years with my boys--something I wouldn't change.
  • Dad died

When my dad died at the age of 60, it forced me to grow up in ways I didn't expect. Relationships change when a family member dies, and through this event and my divorce, I have found that my life has taken a very different path than I thought it would. I am forever grateful for the role model that my dad was for me, and feel very blessed that he lived a full life--I don't think he had regrets.

  • First teaching job after kids

This was a necessary thing for me--I was getting divorced and had no choice. I am now working almost full time, but because my children are young, I have learned to appreciate each job and what it offered me--working part-time isn't financially easy, but it has been great while my kids were young. I have the rest of my life to work full-time, but my children will only be this age once. I make the most of whatever my teaching position is each year--there are always pros and cons.
  • Signed divorce papers

This is an important event in my life--it gives me experiences that help me relate to parents and students whose families have gone through divorce. I do not judge others and remember that we all do the best we can wherever we're at in life.
  • Grad school

I started my first course for my reading license, which is how I will fulfill my elective credits.
