    The tension was high between America and Britian when James Madison took office. The countries honor was at stake. They felt a sence of nationalism. Henry Clay and John C. Colhoun were leaders of the House of Representitives.

    War Hawks were demanding an invation of Canada. Genral William Hull invaded Canada from Detroit. Hull got cold feet and reatreted. Britain Issac Brock took advatage took over 2000 prisoners. It was a serious defeat.

    The USS Constitution defeated the British war ship Guerriere in a fierce battle. They nicknamed the USS constitution old ironside. Because it is 2 feet thick, and the British artilery just bounced off the side.

    This took place at the put-in-buy in the western part of the lake. The American Flag ship was badly damaged. Oliver Hazerd Perry switched out ships and won. Then he said "We have met the enemy and they are ours".

    A British force marched into the city of Dolly Madison. The president's wife packed up all there things and left.The British ended up setting fire to the White House. Along with some other capital buildings.

    Fransis Scott Key saw the British attack Fort Metlenary.He saw that the flag was always on the roof of the fort. So he wrote the star spangled banner on the back of an envolope. Origonaly it was a poem but it got translated into a song.

    A group of fedralist met in conneticut. They suggested that New England should seperate from the United States. While delagates debated the treaty arrived.

    Britain was tired of being at war. So there were talks about a peace treaty in Ghent, Belgium. The two countries later had a peace treaty and the two sides signed it.

    When the Peace treaty was signed it took so long for it to reach America that, a battle at New Orleans happened while it was sending. Andrew Jackson beat the British in New Orleans. This was still a suprising feat.
