President Madison takes office
Tension with Britain was when James Madison became president. Americans were not happy with Britain for arming the the northwest Native Americans. -
War Hawks Take Power
Henry Clay and John C, Calhoun became leaders in the Hosue of Representatives. Opposition to war was the strongest in England. War Hawks are people who are eager for war with Britain. New Englanders believed war with Britain would harm the American trade. -
Relations with Great Britain Worsen
The Britain told the United States they would continue impressing sailors. Native Americans in the North West began new attacks on frontier settlements. Then congress delcared war with Britain. -
Congress Declares War on Britain
The war didnt come at a good time for the British to handle because they were still at war with Europe. Britain was not willing to meet with the Undited States. The Americans were confident that they would win. They provided Native Americans with supprt to protect Canada. It soon came to be that America was not ready for war! -
America is not Ready for War
Jefferson's spending cuts had weaken the America Military. They only had 16 warships ready for action. The army was also very small with only under 7,000 men. Then the British set up a blockade...... the British had 135 ships blocking America ports.
Then a major seabattle began at the begining. -

The British put a blockade on American Ports. They had 135 warships blocking the American ports. The British we able to close off all American ports by wars end. -
Invasion of Canada
Even before the war began war hawks were demanding an invasion on Canada. General William Hull lead a troop from Dertriot to invade Canada. They expected Candaians to throw off British rule. Genral Isaac Brock and his troop surrouned Hull's army and forced it to surrdender. -
USS Constitution scores a victory
The USS defeated the British warship called the Guerriere in a fierce battle. According to tradition Americans nicknamed the Constitution " Old Ironsides" becasue the British artilley fire bounced off the ship's thick wooden bottom of the ships. To the Americans it seemed to them as if the Constituiton was made out of iron. -
Battle of Lake Erie
Both sides wanted the importance of controlling the lake. A key three hour battle was taken place at Put-In-Bay, near the western part of the lake. The American flagships were damgaed alot during the battle. Oliver Hazard Perry decided to swicth ships and continue to fight until they won. Perry announced his victory with dramatic message. Then America defeated them in the battle of Thames. -
Battle of Thames
When the British and their Native Americans allies retreated, Genral William Hernry Harrison and his troop pursuded them. They then followed Britain into Canada. They then defeated them in the Battle of the Thames. Tecumseh was one of the people who were killed in that battle. -
Battle of Horshoe Bend
The Native Americans also suffered in the defeat in the south. The summer of 1813, warriors from Creek attacked serval southern American settlements. Then Andrew Jackson took command of the America forces in Georgia. Jackso then defeated the Creek at the Battle of Horshoe Bend. Then the treaty that ended the fighting force the Creeks to give up a bout one millions of acres of land. -
Washington, D.C Attacked & Burned
British ahd a new therory that was to attack the nations capital Washington D.C. August 1814 a British force marched in to the city. Dolley Madison fled to the White House with all of Presidents papers. British set fire to several bulidings including the White House. -
Attack on Baltimore
After the British attacked Washington D.C they moved to Baltimore. The first thing they wanted to do whas go to Fort McHenry. They bombared the fort during the night. Even a young American was watching the attack. He still at dawn saw the American flag over meaning that the Americans had fought off the attack. Then Key the young american wrote a poem. -
The Writing of the Sparspangled Bangled Banner
Key a young man started wtiting the Star Spangled Banner. He wrote it on a pack of a envolope. The Star Spangled Banner is written asa poem. It told the story of his nights watch. The poem became music and then was very popular. Congress made it the national anthem of the United States in 1931. -
Hartford Convertion
Fedralist met in Hartford Connecticut. Delagtes of the Hartford Convention suggeseted that England should secede. The delagates debated about the peace treaty. Since the war was over the Hartfored Convention soonly ended. -
Treaty of Ghent
By he time the war had ended in 1814 peace talks had started in Ghent. Chirstmas eve 1814 both sides agreed to sign the Treaty of Ghent which ended the war. The treaty put things the way they were before the war had happened. It took several weeks for the news of the treaty to get to the United States. In that time the two sides had fought one more battle. -
Battle of New Orleans
The time that it took for the news of the Treaty of Ghent got to the United States was a long time. The two sides fought the Battle of New Orleans. In 1815 Andrew Jackson and his American troops won a stunning victory against the British in the Abttle of New Orleans.
