    The United States and Britian had very high tensions when Madison took his place in offfice. Britian armed the Native Americans in the northwest. This made American citizens furious.

    The war hawks were eager to go to war with Britain. Henrey Clay and John C. Calhoun were big war hawks, but not everyone was. In New England they believed that going to war with Britian would hurt the trade of the United States.

    The United States and Britian were very close to going to war. Britian was still impressing sailors, and after they armed the Northwest natives they started to attack small frontier settlements. Then the US declared war on Britian.

    After congree declared war on Britian the unites States relized they were not ready for war. When Jefferson became president he cut the military spending budget. There were only 16 warships for the navy, and there were less then 7,000 men to support the army.

    On the first day of war with America and Britian, Britain made a blockade on the American Coast. It was made up of 135 warships. Sadly by the end of the war Britain did manage to block off all American ports.

    America believed the Canada would be happy to throw off British rule. General William Hull lead troops to invade Canada from Detroit. But Hull thought he did not have enough soliders so he retreated from the invasion.

    There was a huge sea battle towards the beging of the war. The USS constitution beat the Britian ship " Guerriere". Constution was also know as "Old Ironsides". The reasoning for this nickname is from the sailors belief that the ship was made of iron. It was able to withstand a artillery fire off of its thick wooden hull.

    Both the US and Canada sides understood that Lake Erie needed complete control. Therefore in the western part of Lake Erie a three hours battle took place. The Americans one and commander Olive Hazard Perry was excited with his victory and made a dramatic comment after winning, " We have met the enemy and they are ours". With the winning of this great bettle Britain had to leave Detroit.

    Even though the Americans one The Battle of Lake Erie, General Harrison wasn'y finished with the British. After the British and there Native friends retreated Harrison followed them to Canada to The Battle of Thames. The Americans striked again, another victory.

    A group of Natives the Creek warriors attacked several US southern settlements. AndrewJackson took command of the US foces in Georgia. Tehy defeated the natives, and made the treaty stating that ended the fighting forced the Creeks to give up millions of acres of land.

    The British had a plan to attack the capital. They had succeded, they burned down a few government buildings including the White House. Before it was burned the presidents wife Dolley grabbed the presidents important papers and fled.

    The British made there way to Baltimore after attacking Washington D.C. There first goal was to capture Fort McHenery. The British had a good effort by blocking off the fort with ships. A bystander watched the attack, this would be Francis Scott Key. When he woke up in the morning and looked outside he could still see the Americna Flag stil standing. The americans beat the British yet again.

    Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner on the back of an envelop. The night after he watched the British attack Baltimore. It statred off as a poem but then became a song after music was added to it. In 1931 Congress declared it the United States national anthem.

    A group of federalist came to a meet in Hartford Connecticut. Some of the delgegtes that attended throught that maybe New England states should withdraw from the USA. Sfter they had done some thinking about this the news of the treaty with Britain arived stating the war was over. After this notice the Hartford Convention ended.

    Britian had gotten tired of war. They had began to talk about peace in Ghent, Belgium. The treaty was signed on Christmas Eve 1814. After the signing of the treaty things went back to normal between Britian and America.

    This was the last battle between Britian and the US. The treaty was signed at this time but took several weeks to get to the United States. Yet again the US won this battle under the command of Andrew Jackson.
