    King Cetshwayo of South Africa leads a war against the British and is very close to defeating them using their spears against guns and shields. This gave other African nations hope that they could try the same and succeed.

    France approved a treaty that gave them the North Bank of the Congo River. Soon other European countries started claiming parts of Africa. This is significant because it started the wave of colonization by European governments.

    14 European nations met together at the Berlin Conference to lay down rules on who can claim land in Africa by letting other nations know who claims what. This is important because it shows how countries didn’t even care that Africa was already a civilization and it already had its own people.
