    Michelangelo
    • Influential painter, sculptor, architect, and poet
    • Made the movement of the male nude form
    • Born in Caprese, Italy
    • Greatest works included the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and the Statue of David
    • He is included amongst the greatest artists of the Renaissance along with Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael

    • Reigned as king after his brother
    • His first wife was Catherine of Aragon
    • Beheaded his first child because it wasnt a boy
    • Henry wanted his own son to take his place as king when he would die

    Mary Tudor

    • She took the throne in 1553 as queen of England and Ireland
    • She was the daughter of King Henry VIII
    • Was 37 at the time of her taking the throne as queen
    • Known as "Bloody Mary" because of persecuting protestants
    • Died of illness in St.James Place on November 12, 1558

    • Martin Luther wrote the 95 Theses
    • These were 95 complaints about the Catholic Chirch
    • He felt that humans could not purchase forgiveness and salvation
    • Luther believed the pope had no authority to release people from their sins
    • He also argued that salvation was achieved through faith and not through good works

    • John Calvin imposed his organization of the church
    • Calvinism was based around absolute power
    • Calvin believed that man was sinful
    • In 1541 he drew up the Ecclesiastical Ordinances
    • Calvin also believed in Predestination

    • Started with Copernicus who asserted sun centered cosmos
    • Ended with Isaac Newton who proposed a mechanical universe
    • Referred as the historical periodization
    • European movements extending over 75 to 185 years
  • William Shakespeare and Globe Theater

    • Wrote his first play in 1590
    • In 1593 plague closed theaters and caused him to write poems
    • In 1581 shakespeare began to write many plays in London
    • In 1601 his father died inspiring him to write Hamlet
    • William Shakespeare died in 1616 on April 23
