I was 21 years old when I got the idea to walk home from Paris to Bad Nenndorf. Here's the first day of my diary.
-
-
It's my 26th birthday, and I am remembering my walk home from Paris. But this is not Paris, this is Beijing. I step out of my door and start walking. It's the first day of The Longest Way.
-
If you don't know what The Longest Way was all about, then check out the original plan on my site. :)
-
Only 3 days on the road, and I make my first good friend. Huihui is a Taekwondo trainer from Xinjiang. He will help me through some tough times later.
-
Snow is all around me, and I've just completed my first thousand kilometers. Of course this calls for a celebration!
-
Massive snow, I got lost on a mountain, had to camp out. No idea how cold it is. Ten below? Twenty? Here I am, camping in the cold.
-
Yes, it's spring and I have walked 2000 kilometers! I am dancing again. :)
-
I am overwhelmed when my way leads me through some Tibetan highlands and I get to see the famous white yaks.
-
A retired railroad mechanic from Ürümqi, Uncle Shen is riding his bike all around China. I am very lucky to become is friend after running into him on the road.
-
Who could have known that we would run into each other? Teacher Xie has been walking around China for more than 25 years, and he has a lot to teach me.
-
Dancing again! This time it's for the 3000km mark!
-
My little brother Robozwerg came over to walk with me for a few weeks. The good life!
-
I was never sure I would get this far. 4000km, and here I am, doing what I always do. Dancing!
-
A happy day in the desert.
-
After the drama of Turpan, here I am getting my hair cut some time after the last day of The Longest Way.
-
I am at home in Germany. The Longest Way is over. But I have all these pictures. I spend more than 4 months putting 1400 of them together into a YouTube video that shows my face going from clean shave to Forrest Gump.
-
The video is finally finally done. I share it on my site, turn off the computer and wait. Who knows what's going to happen?
-
After the success of the video, I was approached by a number of publishers who wanted me to write books about The Longest Way. Of course I was shocked. Real, actual books? I said yes, not knowing about the amount of worry and work that I would have to put in over the next two years to make the books come to life. But i think it was worth it. :)
-
Here I am, trying to balance my life between The Longest Way and a "career". I spend the summer as an intern in Shanghai.
-
The good thing about work: sometimes you get to take a break. I end up visiting Inner Mongolia during the Golden Week. Nice!
-
A flight back from Shanghai. A layover in Dubai. I decide to head out and spend 1 morning in Dubai.
-
Writing and getting my university classes done can be a pain in the ass. But luckily, there is always the home country of my mom's family: Hungary. Even if it's only for a week.
-
I am obsessed with making timelapse videos. So there I am, roaming around Munich, constantly taking pictures.
-
I suck at Russian. So in order to get a bit better at it, I spend a month with a wonderful family in the city of Vladivostok. Everyone speaks excellent English. My Russian still sucks, but I have learned to love Russia.
-
I miss The Longest Way, so I got back to it and start walking from where I had left off in 2008. It's only for about one month this time. But I would never want to miss it. Here's the first day back on The Longest Way in 2010.
-
Here I am, back on The Longest Way for a month. I don't know where I am going to end up as I am starting out in Ürümqi.
-
Another flight back. This time, it's a layover in a different Califat that inspires me to go out and spend a morning in Abu Dhabi.
-
Writing two books and trying to keep up in clas is starting to take a toll. I spend a week in A week in Wichita, Kansas with my wonderful host family there.
-
The folks from the European Outdoor Film Tour are releasing a book, and one of my chapters is in it. I am very excited!
-
I can't believe it. After all these months I am finally handing in the manuscript!
-
Visiting the printing press, watching my books come to life!
-
Taking a time out on the beautiful island of Rhodes. Hasslefree, except for a massive blister. :)
-
This is the first time that I am actually holding my own books in my own hands! So awesome!
-
Missing The Longest Way. Missing it badly. So I go back for a month. Starting where I left off in 2010, to go back on The Longest Way in 2012.
-
And again, I am walking for a month on The Longest Way. Starting out in the city of Wusu, I want to make it to the border of Kazakhstan.
-
It's been almost four years, and I am not sure if I have the right to dance. But then I am the boss of me, right? Here I am, walking and dancing to celebrate 5000 kilometers on foot.
