  • New house! Atlantic street

    New house! Atlantic street
I vividly remember the inside of this house and I was only 3. There were many firsts in this house, that's probably why I remember it so well. Like me teaching myself how to ride a bike.
  • Riding a BIKE!

    Riding a BIKE!
In my house I remember teaching myself how to ride my bike and yelling at my dad to take off the training wheels.....
  • The new car......

    The new car......

I learn a new word..... and it's "machang"
Me and my dad were playing catch in the backyard and I think this was one of the first times my dad played with me so it's seared into my memory.

  • Workaholic

    Workaholic
My dad has always been a workaholic but my mom was always there for his absence. Now my mom started working 7 days a week, and taking me wtih her. I found it almost like an adventure, spending every weekend in the backroom of a giant hotel. But of course, kids get bored and tired easily. I was no different.
  • A new role model

    A new role model
My mom's best friends' daughters husband comes to Canada, and we imediately become friends. He was like a cool father figure.

    Happy..... but why?
I had loads of friends in this period in my life but everything was so confusing. My dad wasn't home but he was still part of my life and at that time, it didn't make sense to me.
  • Egotastical little child

    Egotastical little child
When I was 8, I was the biggest know-it-all you could find. I always thought I knew everything, and everyone else was stupid. This got me in trouble numerous times of course, but my ego never wavered. It is only recently that I've been surpressing my ego because I know how wrong it is. I get it now.
  • Mrs.Goleski and music lessons

    Mrs.Goleski and music lessons
I started piano lessons in September of 2007 and at the time, I didn't much appreciate it. My mom was the one who made me go, and is whom I thank today for making me do so. Music is now a big part of my life, I ususally play the piano everyday. The best part about music to me was that it didn't just come to me, I had to work at it.
  • The Backstreet Boys Concert!..... With a side dish of drama....

The Backstreet Boys Concert!..... With a side dish of drama....
When I was little, I was a die hard Backstreet Boys fan. When the Backstreet Boys came to Winnipeg for a show, I really wanted to go. My mom got booth tickets from her office for free but my dad went and bought tickets anyway. My mom said that I should go with my dad but when he didn't show up on time, my mom took me in fear of missing the show. It all worked out in the end, I got to see my favorite band and me and my mom had a good time.... I just fealt that my dad had failed me, one more time.
  • I watch the Exorcist with my dad...........

I watch the Exorcist with my dad...........
The first (and last) scary movie I watched was The Exorcist with my dad. He felt the need to tease me that I couldn't watch it so I was eager to prove him wrong...... Bad idea. I couldn't sleep for a month and was scared out of my mind. When my dad dropped me home and I started bawling infront of my mom, she was less than impressed. My dad got a great lecture and maybe some burst hearing drums from my mom and life went on.
  • A surprise birthday! AND DDR!

    A surprise birthday! AND DDR!
I had a great ninth birthday party in 2008. I was expecting nothing and I got a whole lot more. My mom told me we were just going to skip my birthday that year and of course I wasn't to happy about that but I said "okay, but can I see a movie with Ravi Uncle?" , and she said that I could. I was of course looking forward to the movie when I walked into my house that day but I was surprised to see all of my friends and family there already. It was a great day.... My dad even showed up.
  • A new school, and being the new kid.

A new school, and being the new kid.
I was the new kid at Linden Meadows in 2008. I came half way through the year and I remember making a new friend the second I walked in:Parsa. We became great friends mostly because we had to go to daycare togehter as well, but we also had a lot in common. Linden Meadows was a whole different atmosphere than my old school and it took some gettig used to, but I always felt welcome and I think that was really important.
  • He's coming home for Christmas!

    He's coming home for Christmas!
After about six months of not seeing him, my dad came home for Christmas. He brought me all sorts of gifts and told me many stories of his travels. It seemed almost magical. Sadly, I was someone that could be bought, and apparently my price was a new laptop. He gave me a laptop which was supposed to be only for school work, and no games. I felt an enormous weight of responsibility. It felt very foreign but I welcomed the change. I thouht I was growing up, and in a sense I was.
  • Uncle Chami!... And house shopping.

    Uncle Chami!... And house shopping.
One of my mom's university friends come and stay with us for a week or so. We were looking to build a house at the time and I don't think if he hadn't come we would've bought this house. He really helped my mom make some tough decisions and I am grateful that he did so. He also gave me a hundred dollars which was also appreciated.
  • A trip to the race track

A trip to the race track
My dad comes back for PD in Canada so I get the chance to see him. He takes me out to Grand Prix and we spend a fun-filled afternoon go-karting. We had pizza and I remember it just being a fun day. Just a great day.
  • We sell our house and move to an appartment

We sell our house and move to an appartment
In December we sold our house and moved to an appartment. I had mixed emotions because I knew my dad wouldn't be included in the building process in this house. I also knew he wasn't going to be living in it. When we built the first house, he was around. There were pieces of my dad in that house and because we sold it, they were gone. The new house wouldn't include him, and I didn't know how to feel about that.
  • The little kid next door

    The little kid next door
In January we moved out of our house and into an appartment. There we met a Sri Lankan family with a three year old boy who became very attached to me. His first word was brother so he could talk to me. That was such a significant moment in my life because I knew that I had made an impact or impression on this little boy.
  • I go to my first exam, and I do well.

I go to my first exam, and I do well.
My first ever exam, was my grade one piano exam. I was extremely nervous but I had worked as hard as I could, and in the end it paid off. I got 90 which is first class honours with distinction. My mom was very proud of me, and even more importantly, I was proud of myself. I was satisfied.
  • Our blood sweat and tears.

    Our blood sweat and tears.
Our house was finally finished on June 30 of 2010 and we couldn't have been more excited. We worked so hard to build this house. My mom did an exam in July and we had to go to Sri Lanka in August. It was a very busy time in our lives but also very purposeful. I love the house we live in now, it reminds me of what hard work can do.
  • I break my leg... A good thing?

I break my leg... A good thing?
While I'm playing cricket with my cousins is Sri Lanka, I break my leg. I drive for 2 hours on terrible roads just to get to a hospital. It was horrendous. Because my mom doesn't think she can travel with me being handicapped, she calls my dad and tells him to help us out. He comes from Africa and we leave Sri Lanka that same day. When we arrived in Canada though, things seemed different. It was an oppurtunity to become a family, and we all jumped at it.
  • My buddy leaves!

    My buddy leaves!
Parsa and his family pick up and move to Boston. They will be back in a year, but still I thought I'd miss him. I didn't though, because we kept in touch through skype....... The beauty of technology.
  • I get an iPad!

I got to Trey's house for the first time
Me and Trey were friends for about a year before I even went to his house. It was a good day, I remember being tied up and thrown in a closet by Kevin.... It was still fun though.
  • A family trip to Vegas!

    A family trip to Vegas!
We go to Las Vegas for christmas and the first few days are great. It gets boring after you see all the lights though because there's nothing for a twelve year old to do! We meet one of my dad's cousins though and it was really nice meeting him. He told me stories of my dad "back in the day" which I really enjoyed.
  • Vegas doesn't go as planned... Thank goodness for Rose.

Vegas doesn't go as planned... Thank goodness for Rose.
Vegas turns sour and I return home in a dull grey mood. It was Rose who picked me back up and told me to keep walking and I'm always thankful to her for it. She became immensly important to me.
  • My mom quits her job, and I get scared

My mom quits her job, and I get scared
My mom has a dispute with a co-worker and quits her job. My dad doesn't have an extremely stable job so I freaked out. I wasn't sure if we could survive without my mom having a job. Now I know not to doubt my mom so fast, and that she always has a backup plan.
  • Africa... A whole different world.

    Africa... A whole different world.
A trip to Africa teaches me all is not fair in the world, and it might never been. The rich in Africa drive nothing less than a BMW, while the poor are struggling to eat. It gave me a whole new perspective of the world.
  • Missing my best friend.....

  • Back in Canda!

    Back in Canda!
I come back and find out that I'm in Hood. With all of my friends (minus JJ). I was ecstatic and looking forward to crushing Mr.B's ego, just by showing him how awesome I was. I think it's working. The best part of it all, I'M WITH MY FRIENDS! ESPECIALLY MY BEST FRIEND!... And it's turning out to be quite an interesting year, I can't wait for everything that's going to happen this year.
  • Africa doesn't turn out as well as hoped and we move on to Sri Lanka

Africa doesn't turn out as well as hoped and we move on to Sri Lanka
We go back home, to where we really do belong... Or at least we're supposed to. I don't feel normal when I'm in Sri Lanka, probably thanks to the fact that I live in Canada. I'm still a Sri Lankan boy from head to toe, which is something I can't change, but when I'm in Sri Lanka I stand out. It doesn't feel amazing.
