The Journal of a Civil War Sharpshooter. By Alan Deuchert

  • Journal Entry #1

My name is Alan Deuchert, I am 18 years old and I live on a farm with my parents and my sister and my two dogs Callie and Max. It still fells like seconds ago we heard that there was an attack on Fort Sumter and the Confederates won. I've decided to join the sharpshooters I want to be like my grandpa, he was in the War of 1812 and he was a general. I want to be like him. Tommorow, I begin my "journey" to the campground.
  • Period: to

    April 12th, 1861 to April 9th, 1865

  • Journal Entry #2

I have been currently heading to the campground. I fell like it's been almost been hours of walking. I asked a merchant how much longer to get to the camp ground. The traveler said he says about an 5 hours away. I am mad that the "journey" will not end soon. Soon, I will start to find some shelter and get some rest. I will update as soon as possible.
  • Journal Entry #3

I am in a small town. The locals are very mean-spirited. I saw a poster of our president Abraham Lincoln that some body graffitied with dark ink making him saying, "I love the Confederates.". I'm happy I found a sweet girl who let me sleep in the inn (her boss said no, but she persuaid her,) I hope that I don't run out of money anytime soon. I'm about 2 hours and 30 minutes away from the campground. Hopefully, I will soon get there without any delays tommorow.
  • Journal Entry #4

I've finally made it! Private Deuchert reporting for duty! I'm getting settled into my minute tent. Some of the men are playing games, talking, eating or sleeping. There is a thick cloud of cigar smoke by me. I'm famished from eating a load of dry fruit. I also met some of my fellow comrads. I remember Private Noland, (he's a nice guy.) Corporal Kyril and Corporal Nash. (those two I heard are long time friends). I can't for tommorow!
  • Journal Entry #5

Today I was introduced to some captains and other high ranking officers. Corproal Kyril and Nash showed me around the camp and taught me how to play blackjack and other games. I got some money from playing some blackjack. I have to admit I'm pretty good. Tommorow I'm going to learn some of the basics of our primary weapon,
  • Journal Entry #6

Today I learned about the Sharps Rifle. We have to first tear off the off the top of a gun powder cartridge and pour it down the barrel and use the ram rod to push the power all the way down. Then you put in the bullet in and use the ram rod. Then you half cock the weapon and put the percussion cap on the nipple and then you fully cock it and you are ready to fire and repeat. I caught on how it works and my rate of fire is 7 shots per minute. It can't be anymore simpular.
  • Journal Entry #7

Today Nash was promoted to Sergeant. A former Sergeant died of some cold. I have no idea what it was. But, Me, Kyril, Noland and other sharpshooters threw a "party" for him. There was smoke and a load of chatter. I decided to lay low so I wouldn't get into trouble. Who knows what they would do? Get alchoal? I hope they know getting drunk would be a bad idea.
  • Journal Entry #8

I saw a guy being taken to the camp hospital. I heard from a fellow soldier that his friend mistaken him as a Rebel and he got poked with a bayonnet. He said the injurey was not bad at all. A few minutes later, I heard him screaming in absolute agony. Poor guy, I know that I will have to be carefull or else I will feel like him. All in pain and feeling like I gonna die.
  • Journal Entry #9

The days feel slower now. I want some action. I've been waiting for us to be shipped somewhere already. Hopefully soon I will go somewhere new soon.
  • Journal Entry #10

We have heard that were running low on food. I hope it is just a little rumor as I don't want our food supplies don't run out soon. That would be absolutly horrible. If we lose coffee, I probably go completely go insane. I don't want to eat food that makes me want to vomit.
  • Journal Entry #11

We were attacked by a little legion of Rebels at sunset. The Rebels had a lot of gear on and the element of suprise was not on thier side. The heard the cluttering of there equipment so then higher-ranking officers told us what to do. We hid behind our tents. We then poped out and we attacked. We got a good amount of Rebels by that and we got into position and then drived out them until all were slayed. 5 men were killed on our side. We bury them and stole the supplies of the fallen Rebles.
  • Journal Entry #12

The Rebles bodies were starting to stink. We went about 2 miles and buryed them in the plains. I had so much fun. The adrenaline I had from that mini battle was so so exicting and scary that my heart was beating crazily. I wish we will have another battle soon.
  • Journal Entry #13

We are starting to run low on food. Our food limit is getting smaller, we are now getting this stuff called hardtack It's very dry and the taste is quite gross. I don't want to eat this stuff, but I have to or I'll starve to death. Me and my friends dip it in our morning coffee.I softens it up more. It tastes a tiny bit better. Now I hope we will still get coffee.
  • Journal Entry #14

Today we learned more about the bayonet. The bayonet will be our close up weapon. We use it to pillage the enemy with it. You put on the tip of the weapon so the length of the bayonet attack is more better. But why? You could just go caveman and bash them with the butt of the rifle. Oh well, I'll probably have to use it if a run out of ammunition. Only as a last resort though.
  • Journal Entry #15

I'm starting to get homesick. I miss my parents, my sister and my two dogs. I cannot run away or I'll be executed in front of everyone. I miss them so much,
  • Journal Entry #16

The men and I were talking what we were going to do after the war. I said that I would want to see my family again and then head back for more action. A old man said he had a grandchilden who was born on the 19th and after the war he would retire and spend time with him and tell him the stories of this war. Kyril said he will still be in the army until the day he dies. I am happy that every man has something to do after this terrible conflict.
  • Journal Entry #17

We were now finally given our uniforms, we are dressing up in green as probably we will use it as camoflauge I guess. I was assigned my regiment today. I am in the 8th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry. Kyril, Nash and also Nolald is in it. I am very happy my friends are with me. Me and my friends will be fighting side by side!
  • Journal Entry #18

Our camp is packed as sick soldiers were being treated. Me and the three are in Nash's tent (as it was the biggest of all ours) and we played card games. I lost some money today but I didn't lose a ton. It is night and I hear the sick people moaning. I can't get any sleep at because of them.
  • Journal Entry #19

Finally It is time for us to shine! We are being sent to West Virginia to help the infantry out. I hope I'm ready!
  • Journal Entry #20

The battle has been won! This battle was more like a skirmish than a battle. Bullets flying out of the wazoo and people moving a lot. I shot 2 guys in the chest. I have to admit I did preety good out thier!
  • Journal Entry #21

We have been assigned a duty to move up to Hampton, Virginia Some reporter spotted Confederates in outposts near a church called Little and Big Bethel. Hopefully we shall win twice in a row!
  • Journal Entry #22

Many men are getting hungry and sick. I'm not catching any signs of being sick but I'm worried. Hungry & sick men aren't in the fighting position to do this. I starting to think if we lose if the men aren't well. The Confederates (Or CSA as now I call them) will will try every thing in thier power to win this battle coming up.
  • Journal Entry #23

Today the commander said were are starting to approach the town. I'm happy and the sick people are getting better! I have all my equipment and my gun all ready to fire. Let's do this!
  • Journal Entry #24

They were just to strong today. We were in line and nearing the church, but the CSA were there and just repeled us with heavy firing. We had to quickly withdraw and head back to Hampton, many soldiers are recovering from this horrible battle. I saw a doctor covered in blood. I was grazed by a shot and my cheek was bleeding. It stopped thankfully. My friends were in one piece. This is a sad day for the Union.
  • Journal Entry #25

We are being taken back to camp today to recover some more after yesterday. We saw a calvary regiment riding on there mighty steeds. They smiled at us as rode on. I hope we will get back to camp cause I'm dying for food.
  • Journal Entry #26

We are now being sent out again. I'm famished from all of that hardtack and fruit. We are waiting though for further instructions.
  • Journal Entry #27

We are heading out to get food for the camp. We need to do this as the rations aren't enough for us so a small team comprising of Me and 4 privates and 2 corporals to find food. We got a lot meat and wheat. I hope it will last for about a month.
  • Journal Entry #28

More scavangers are still finding food. I'm still waiting for dinner to be served. I'm so hungry I could eat a horse. I heared a man pummeled a rat and he's going to eat it for his dinner. Were desperate for food right now. I hope a extra supply of food will be given to us.
  • Journal Entry #29

Today it was so hot that we were sent to the local river and bring barrels of water to camp. I slurped 2 pails of water (it's used for gaining water and pouring it into the barrels.) I didn't want to dehydrate. We got about 20 barrels. I should last us three days.
  • Journal Entry #30

Today we heard the officers that the Pro-Union Missouri Home Guard was defeated by Pro-Confederate Missouri State Guard at Cole Camp. I could feel the soldiers pain of losing Cole Camp to the CSA. We must win the Manassas Campaign.
  • Journal Entry #31

We have now got word that the Federals in Missouri saw the CSA. We're going to be heading out Missouri now. Me and my fellow comrads are all set. It will be a long time to get all the way to Missouri. But, it will be worth it. Let's head out!
  • Journal Entry #32

The view I have on the wagon is beutiful. I've never head near the northwest. The sunset is beautiful. I wish I was out on the field felling the crisp wind through my hair. Hopefully, I will be here again in my llifetime. I wish this war was over very soon so I could show my family this beautiful sight. I'll miss this place probably the most.
  • Journal Entry #33

We just passed a town. I am eating a piece of apple pie. Women in this town handed us food, water, clothes and blankets. We thanked them and we kept on going. Hopefully, we will get thier soon.
  • Journal Entry #34

We are not even nearing Carthrage yet. Hopfully we shall get thier soon. I think we will not even make in to Carthrage as soon as possible, My guess is the Missouri Guard will be able to fend off the troops and that we will need to bury them.
  • Journal Entry #35

We made it in time. The bad news is we lost. We tried are best to fend the CSA off. But it didn't work. Today was hot and I could smell the dead bodies starting to rot. One of the commanders of the infantry said that they were going to West Virgina so they can attack the CSA at two places, Fairfax County and Prince William County, Virginia. We are heading out with the infantry. We gave the fellow troops some food and supplies. Were still getting ready to head out to the two places. I can't wait!
  • Journal Entry #36

We are currently in Indiana, the landscape is beautiful and I hope we soon get to West Virgina for a fight. We are waiting for lunch and coffee. I hope the horses will hurry up and get tp West Virgina ASAP.
  • Journal Entry #37

Nothing big happened today. We are in Ohio now and we are coming up to West Virginia. Men are tired and about 10% of us are sick and 7% are still being treated for wounds. We'll make it to West Virginia soon and there going to be treated.
  • Journal Entry #38

We have heard that the US Infantry defeated the CSA at a place called Randolph County, West Virginia. We cheered when we heared the news and cheered when we heared that we made it to West Virgina. Finally!
  • Journal Entry #39

Today we are now in a camp. I met Mr. Irvin McDowell at camp. He seems like a nice man. I can't wait to fight soon! I'm getting bored of just traveling.
  • Journal Entry #40

Today we just sat around camp. I met some soldiers and high ranking officers today. Irvin McDowell's army men are nice people. Me and my friends played cards with them and we also talked with them. There running low on food. We shared some food with them. I'm more hungry as my ration was small. Oh well, I guess they nedded the food more.
  • Journal Entry #41

The heat is deadly today, we are begging to God for water. I don't know if dehydration will hit this camp. We are going to a near reservoir to get water ASAP. Some soldiers came back with 2 barrals of water now. We are hopfully be saved.
  • Journal Entry #42

Me, my comrads and the other army were marching in Washington D.C, I even saw Abe Lincoln. He gave a big grin and waved at us. He looked healthy and happy. I hope he's doing the best for the Union. I think he is, he is a Republican and the Republicans are better than any other parties. I hope he will do will live for a long time.
  • Journal Entry #43

We have sadly lost The Battle of Blackburn's Ford today. The Confederates about 7,000 soldiers and we had only 3,000. Irvin McDowell said we lost 85 men today. I wish we had more soldiers so we could have won the battle today. The only good news is a ranked up to Corproal today!! My friends congratulated me. I'm so happy but sad today.
  • Journal Entry #44

We had an army meeting with the high-ranking officers. We are going to strike the CSA hard tommorow. I can't wait! My 1st major battle happens tommorow!!!
  • Journal Entry #46 *THE 1ST BATTLE OF BULL RUN* (2/3)

Were hiding behind trees and shooting without hesitation. There were clouds of smoke from the cannons and the muskets. I could just smell death every nanosecond. The infantry suffered huge blows. Even the calvary too. Soon, we had to escape this nightmare. A saw one of the Generals of the other side. It was General Jackson. He was like a stone wall out there. Us and the troops call him General "Stonewall" Jackson. The CSA cannons kept on firing as we left, The wanted more blood. We kept on...
  • Journal Entry #47 *THE 1ST BATTLE OF BULL RUN* (3/3)

Kept on running on for miles to get to a nearby camp. We are in the camp watching injured soldiers going into a little building. Some soldiers are now being buried and sadly other soldiers are missing. I hope those poor souls wiil be safe and O.K. The only good thing about todat is that I, was promoted to Sergeant! My friends cheered. It does get a tiny better though. Nash was promoted 2nd Lieutenant, Kyril was promoted to Sergeant too and Noland was became a Corporal. This is still a sad day.
  • Journal Entry #45 *THE 1ST BATTLE OF BULL RUN* (1/3)

I am so angry right now. We lost the The 1st Battle of Bull Run. I saw people in the sidelines watching us eating food and drinking. This is a war. There is no reason that they should be there. The CSA was just to darn strong, They were under cover and there cannons just murdered us. During the battle, I saw the people on the sidelines screaming and getting back in there wagons and carriages fleeing. I shot 5 soldiers in the head and got 8 wounded. My friends kept on reloading and firing. We...
  • Journal Entry #59

We are in a small camp. We are in Nash's big tent. We are playing blackjack. Nash is smoking a cigar that is making a immense cloud of smoke covering the tent. I've gotten two perfect draws (a ace and a face.) I've gotten $20.00 during the game. I love blackjack a lot. This is my best card game I can play. I dispise poker and other games.
  • Journal Entry #48

We are bidding the camp in West Virginia farwell. We are in the camp packing up. We are heading to Missouri again to help any Federal soldiers in need. I am in a small wagon right now. With my fellow comrads except Nash. He's signing some officer papers or somthing along the lines of that. Fellow sharpshooters are waving goodbye to the infantry. I waved to them and can't wait for more action for an other day!
  • Journal Entry #49

We are nearing a new campground where some soldiers are. We are planning to share with them the idea of heading to the west of Mississippi. I can't believe still we are fighting in Deep South now. Maybe this civil war will end soon. I see men being trained with a very loud and gruff sergeant. I see soldiers eating hardtack and drinking a bevrage. We cannot wait to enter the campground and eat some grub!
  • Journal Entry #50

I met some some sergeants and other soldiers. Nash appartly gets a bigger tent . (Lucky goose.) Appartly the gruff training sergeant is sick and tommorow I'm going to be training the recruits. The biggest problem is I don't know the 1st rule of even training people to be strong fighters. Nash said today he would give me some pointers of how to be a drill sergeant. Thank God.
  • Journal Entry #51

It's dusk and I still don't feel tired. I did a sucky job of teaching the recruits. (My fellow friends said I did a excellent job, but I know they don't me to be deppressed. I thank them for that.) It started off badly as some soldier accidently din't properly load there gun and there was a mini explosion. Everybody just looked at him and he was grinning. I was grinning to as that smile maked me want to laugh. But, It was kinda fun though to be able to train new army men.
  • Journal Entry #52

Our rations are slowly drecreasing again. I'm now getting hungrier now. I have to admit, I been getting more hungrier than ever before. Yikes. The hardtack is getting dark. It tastes even viler than before. I have concluded that regular hardtack = bad and dark hardtack = even badder than regular hardtack. Dry fruit and it now running lower than before, this won't be good at all.
  • Journal Entry #53

It was a quiet day. I just sat around with my friends and talked around the campfire. My friends said that they were now turning homesick. I feel like my family is dissapearing before my very eyes. I miss my two dogs, my kind sister and my always loving parents. I just want to go home soon. I'm sure every man in this conflict is missing thier family too.
  • Journal Entry #54

Today we are heading deeper down into Missouri, hopefully we will reach Mississippi River soon. Soldiers said that we will probably meet foes along the way. I know we shall not be stopped at all . Many soldiers are vice-gripping thier guns waiting for an Missouri State Guard to pop up and slaughter every one of us. I now this as I'm doing it too. I'm just waiting for the CSA to appear out of thin air.
  • Journal Entry #55

There is good news and bad news, The good news is we got to the Mississippi River. The bad news is the Missouri State Guard and the Arkansas state militia were waiting for us. We didn't know they would be thier. They began shooting at us soon as they saw us. We opened fire as soon as we heared thier first shot. The CSA kept on pushing us back until we started to flee. We shall win a battle soon. I hope.
  • Journal Entry #56

We are in Missouri agai. Today more soldiers were joining the sharpshooters. I'm happy we have more soldiers to help us. I had to train more recruits again, and I did more better than the 1st time I did teaching. I can't wait to see them in action. Let's hope they don't die on there 1st battle.
  • Journal Entry #57

Today we destroyed some CSA camps in Charleston, Missouri. I killed about 5 CSA infantry members. My friends sadly got more kills then me. I saw Nash helping some soldiers. Nash doesn't seem like the helping type. I would want to be more in the action than helping the privates and corporals. If I become my goal of Lieutenant General. I want to fight than make strategy movements. The battle raged on until we destroyed the camps. Thank God for victory!
  • Journal Entry #58

We are heading back to West Virginia again. I starting to hate traviling back to the same place to the same place over and over again. It's getting extremly more tedious everytime. I cannot wait to go to a place where I've never went before. I want to go into the Deep South and fight a titanic group of the CSA. That would be cool to fight a horde of CSA. Would be cool or what?
  • Journal Entry #60

We are hearing stuff in the forest. We do not know if it is the CSA or some wild animals. I hope it's just wild animals cause if the CSA is nearby, we will be absolutly screwed. We have men who are taking duties of protecting the camp. By patrolling the perimeter of the campground. Hopefully, this plan will work.
  • Journal Entry #61

We did not that the CSA would sneek up on us. The had barely aanything on them. This made them more stealthly as they did not have any big stuff. Only the biggest them they had was there gun. We need to take a lesson from them and do this too. Think of how many battles we would win with the power of stealth. We could finish the war in almost seconds. Think about it.
  • Journal Entry #62

Those CSA guys will not forget the battle we had yesterday and even the The First Battle of Bull Run. We are going to attack North Carolina. This will probably help the soldiers forget about the attacks on campgrounds. Even Bull Run. I cannot wait to see the look on the CSA forces faces when we kick thier butts tommorow. I hope we are all set and the CSA will lose big time.
  • Journal Entry #63 (The Battle of Hatteras Inlet Batteries Day 1 Part 1/2)

The battle is still raging on. We stacked up big logs so we could use them as shields. We need reinforcements ASAP. In the morning. We saw the ships USS Minnesota, USS Wabash, and USS Cumberland was begining to bombard Fort Clark. The USS Susquehanna helped the other three ships. The four ships had a great strategy of backing up to reload thier guns and moved forward to shoot again. Then Repeat. Nice idea navy. For infantry, we were having a tough time landing in the swamp. The wind splashed
  • Journal Entry #64 (The Battle of Hatteras Inlet Batteries Day 1 Part 2/2)

Swamp water in our faces. We marched and helped the four naval ships. About 12:25 p.m, the CSA army in Fort Clark started to abandon the fort or ran to the only fort they had near them, Fort Hatteras. I looked up at the sky. The weather kept on geting darker and badder every minute. We are going to sleep foodless and barely any water left. We are also being smashed with bad weather. I hope to God we will get reinforcements soon.
  • Journal Entry #65 (The Battle of Hatteras Inlet Batteries Day 1.5

It is sunset. I had to record again as it's importent. God has destroyed my prayer as the CSA have reinforcements! 700+ soldiers have arived. They are protecting Fort Clark again. Sadly, our ships evacuated the area as the weather of the sea is getting to strong. They are holding us at bay. The rain is hard to see right now. Nightime is going to fall soon. Will we survive? I hope to Lord Almighty we will!
  • Journal Entry #66 (The Battle of Hatteras Inlet Batteries Day 2)

We have won the two-day battle! God helped us by stopping the awful weather. The Navy returned and they did the exact same strategy again. They also destroyed rides so absolutly no more CSA reinforcements. (What would do without them? Seriously.) The ships soon couldn't fire at a good range. They stayed in the same place. They poured fire into the fort. We kept on moving forward. In three hours, we won. Every single soldier not dead moved into prisoner of war camps. Thank God for this victory!
  • Journal Entry #67

The night is hot and humid. We are scaverging the land for food and water. We hope it will it will last until our rations will rise over time. The men with me are getting weak as the battle on August 29 put a number on them. We want to go to the campground very soon. I got to stop writing now as the other men are yelling at me to help them carry the supplies back to camp.
  • Journal Entry #68

We have heard that the US calvary has been defeated by the Missouri State Guard at Vernon County, Missouri. We have no idea how many men has been in that tragic loss. I'm praying for the saftey of the Union calvary and for them to win a battle for another day. I wish the Missouri State Guard will soon die out as many losses are cased by those men. There almost indestructible!
  • Journal Entry #69

We are now in West Virgina again. Joy.
  • Journal Entry #70

We have heard that some infantry today won a battle in Nicholas County, West Virginia. I gave them a prayer of congratulations. They deservered it. Thank god we won a battle today. We are finally in Pocahontas County, West Virginia and nearing Cheat Mountain. I cannot wait to see a wide view at the top!
  • Journal Entry #71

God help me, I am currently missing from my regiment. I have no idea where my team is. Robert E. Lee's forces are now attacking Cheat Mountain. Lord Almighty must be watching this battle. We were fighting and we pulled back a few feet and I tripped down a steep hill. I was knocked unconscious and now I don't know where they are. I'm currenty deciding what to do now. Save me Lord, save me!!!
  • Journal Entry #72

I'm now walking around. It is absolutly quiet around where I am. I saw a sign that a town is 5 miles east of were I am. I gonna go there and hopefully I'll find an regiment and just maybe they will help me out. Or I'll stumble with my regiment again. I'm running low on ink. Well that's just dandy.
  • Journal Entry #73

I'm now with the 1st United States Volunteer Sharpshooter Regiment. Thank God they found me. I was in a little shop buying more ink when the Commander of the 1st USS, Colonel Hiram Berdan came in. I told him my story of how I got lost and he decided to help me out. He said that he will let me join The 1st USS for a while. He said he needed some more men and now wants me to show him how good I am. Maybe I can join them!
  • Journal Entry #74

Happy 19th birthday to me and I am now with the 1st USS for a while. I'll miss my friends and also my fellow comrads for a bit. I cannot wait until I get to action again! Hopefully I will meet up with them again someday. My journey with the 1st United States Volunteer Sharpshooter Regiment begins!!!
  • Journal Entry #75

2nd Lieutenant Alan Deuchert reporting for duty! Colonel Hiram Berdan said that he needed a 2nd Lieutenant so he promoted me to Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant! I guess I'm O.K of controlling some soldiers. I just hope that I'll do good. But now I'm an high ranking officer. Awesome!
  • Journal Entry #76

Today I led some soldiers on a march. I got to show new cadets how to load and fire guns. Hiram Berdan showed me a thing that is supposed to help sharpshooters aim more better. It's called a telescopic sight. It's a monster. It's pretty big in my opinion. But it works like a charm. I love the telescopic sight more then the flip scope we have for the Sharps rifle.
  • Journal Entry #77

Hiram Berdan showed me some of his inventions, One of them was a commercial gold amalgamation machine that could actually separate gold from ore. That's pretty cool. He also showed me a repeating rifle and a musket ball he made before the war. He's a pretty cool guy if you ask me.
  • Journal Entry #78

Today Hiram Berdan gave me my green uniform (I guess it's suppose to be camoflauge.) He also gave me an a weapon with one of those telescopic sight attactment. I also had to take the 1st USS test. It was pretty brutal. It felt like forever until it ended. He said I did great. Can't wait for my 1st assignment.
  • Journal Entry #79

We saw Hiram Berdan firing for a demostration for cadets. He is an amazing shot. You can kill of every single sense he has and he will still be able to shoot you right between his eyes. He is like a pro and he's nearing 40 years old. That's pretty old to me. Every sharpshooter in the universe isn't better than him. Hiram Berdan is like the god of sharpshooters.
  • Journal Entry #80

Today is cold and rainy. The food will probably taste gross. We are quite hungry but Hiram Berdan said that our rations will slowly get bigger. We are also in need in water. Some soldiers leaned thier heads upward and also opened up thier mouths to not get dehydrated. We are praying for the weather to get better very soon.
  • Journal Entry #81

Our rations our slighty getting bigger. We are getting some meat, dry fruit, less hardtack, coffee and other stuff. I'm so glad the rations are getting bigger. I hope that the ration will stay the same for the rest of this civil war. I would be absolutly joyful. I cannot wait for tommorow and I will get the same ration again.
  • Journal Entry #82

I'm starting to begining now to learn to control forces. I have also gotton a beautiful bowie knife (it was taken off the dead body of a Confederate Seargeant.) It has a silver handle and it's 100% clean. The blade of the knive is stain-clean. I love it a lot. All I now is if a CSA soldier comes out to assassinate me, that knive is going straight to the heart. I tell you. I also was shown a breech- loading gun. It's better that muzzle loading gun. It's nice and handles very well.
  • Journal Entry #83

Today was cold and dry. I hope that it will probably be in the 40's soon.
  • Journal Entry #84

Hiram Berdan has gave me a Sharps breech-loading rifle. It a beast. I tested it with a piece of paper. I put a bullseye on it and shot it. I shot 3 shots in quick succession with the flip sight. I put on the telescopic sight and got 2 bullsyes and 1 inner ring shot. This is what I call a gun!
  • Journal Entry #85

Today was a perfect day. Sky blue, no clouds at all, in the 50's and a very nice breeze. I slept most of the day, but it is hard to sleep with smoke in the air and the smell of liquor in the air. Hiram Berdan went to talk with the "big wigs". I mean the Generals, Brigadiers, all that stuff. I cannot wait until I'm a Lieutenant General one day!
  • Journal Entry #86

We just came back from getting some meat, fruits and water. The meat is very tasty but water isn't the best. Hiram Berdan and other bigwigs want President Abraham Lincoln to make higher rations aand they want more weapons and more ammunation. I don't blame them. We need more supplies or we will lose this civil war.
  • Journal Entry #87

We are tired, the cadets and me finished marching. A major told me to train the soldiers at 3:00 A.M. He told me this at 2:50 A.M. The soldiers groaned at this and we began marching. The night air was cold and the moon shined upon us as we marched. I guess the bigwigs had good intentions. He wants every soldier to be ready physically and mentally if the CSA attacks in the night. I'm so awake right now cause I splashed cold water on my face. I probably go to bed soon.
  • Journal Entry #88

I awoke upon dawn. The beautiful sun arose from the hills and it's rays hit the camp faster than a bullet can hit a soldier. It's weirdly warm today though. I wish it was more colder as it's November. Only one more month until December. I'm going to miss celebrating the two holidays coming up with my family.
  • Journal Entry #89

The food rations are getting I bit more better. I hope that Hiram Berdan is more happy about this. He would probably kill Abraham Lincoln if his soldiers weren't treated well at all. But we are hoping it will get even bigger.
  • Journal Entry #90

I am currently on patrol duty, Hiram Berdan said that my job today is to patrol the southeast side of camp. I stabbed with my knive 2 rabbits and 1 hare. Luckily the southeast side of camp has a few apple trees. I suprised how nobody saw them. I chowed down on them. While I record this, I'm on my 5th apple. It's delicous. It's tastes just right. I'm quite hungry still though.
  • Journal Entry #91

I cannot wait. Only 9 more days until Thanksgiving. Then of course Christmas will come around soon. Sadly, I going to probably eat hardtack than eating a mouth-watering turkey. I wish for two days every year, you could take a day off. I would choose my birthday and Christmas. I miss my family so much.
  • Journal Entry #92

Today is Thanksgiving, Our rations went up today. I won $50 in blackjack, We are having a little fiesta here. I am thankful for the 1st USS finding me, having such a loving family at myside at all times and having the greatest sharpshooter, Hiram Berdan as my commander. All around, I'm having a good time with the 1st USS. I do wish my friends to be save and for them to have a great Thanksgiving.
  • Journal Entry #93

I recieved a letter today. It was from my family. This is what it said... Dear Alan,
We miss you so much, we all hope from home that you had a good Thanksgiving down there. Father is out hunting with Max, Caitlin is out hving fun with friends and Callie is chewing on a bone. I hope soon this disaster of a war will soon end. We all miss you. Love, Mom.
  • Journal Entry #94

Today is the beginning of good ol' December. It must have snowed about 3 inches of snow last night. My shoes are icy cold and I can see my breath. My shoes are starting to get in preety bad shape. That's always a good sign.
  • Journal Entry #95

The days are quickly getting shorter. It feels like the sun is lazy and only comes up for a few hours and when shift is over and the moon is all set for his shift. The sun runs back to bed and sleeps some more. Then it does the same thing all over again. All I know is soon Christmas will appear and vanish. I hope no fighting goes on in Christmas Eve and also Christmas Day.
  • Journal Entry #96

I am currently eating my breakfast as I do journal entry #96. My breakfast consist of hardtack, coffee dry fruit. I'm still hungry and I wish I could have freash fruit and better coffee. I want to start off a day with a sour green apple. That is how you start a day. Hopefully we will get something that is better soon.
  • Journal Entry #97

Only 9 more days until Christmas! The snow is now about 1 feet high and it will not let up at all. I hope the snow will melt to 6 inches soon. My legs are now getting involved. They are absolutly freezing now and guess what? My shoes are now officially beatten up. Horrah.
  • Journal Entry #98

The weather is now getting nasty. Snow is flying around and the wind makes it even nastier. I saw a tent flying around because of this horrible weather. Hot coffee is not doing anything for me as soon as I drink my coffee. I get a hot feeling for five seconds and then I'm cold again! I hate this weather.
  • Journal Entry #99

Merry Christmas! I'm so happy that it's Christmas. Today in the mail I got a letter of Merry Christmas from my parents and my present was new shoes. THANK YOU, GOD! I swear I was gonna get frostbite soon. Last time I check, I don't wanna lose a foot because of that. I wish my parents, my fellow comrads and everybody else (except the CSA), a MERRY CHRISTMAS!
  • Journal Entry #100

Happy New Year to everyone (except the CSA)! I also cannot beleive I got 100 journal entries now. It fells like yesterday I started Journal Entry #1. I cannot wait for more heart-pounding action and probably this year I can rank up again. There are so much possibilties this year!!!
  • Journal Entry #101

The weather is starting to calm dow here. The ground is extremly icy. I almost fell cause of it. The coffee get's colder now and the hardtack is even more stale. Many soldiers are getting the winter flu. This is going to be a very special January if you ask.
  • Journal Entry #102

Hiram Berdan called me into his tent. He was talking about me training the cadets. He said I was doing a good job with them He also said something about a Peninsula Campaign or something like that. He said it was going to be the first large-scale offensive in the Eastern Theater. "This will be huge" he said. I cannot wait!
  • Journal Entry #103

We are going hungry. Some other soldiers are finding abandoned places for hospitals. We found one abandoned farm and we are using it for some other sharpshooters to go there cause of the winter flu. I hope nobody will die of this horrible flu.
  • Journal Entry #104

The snow is starting to go away now. Hiram Berdan had to leave for a bit for starting more recruitment areas in the North. A brigadier general took hold of Hiram Berdan's position now until he gets back. Hopefully he will return as soon as possible. I mean, the brigadier general is nice man. But, I will miss Hiram Berdan though.
  • Journal Entry #105

I am now back on guard duty, Nothing is happing so far. I wish some action wil happen soon for the 1st USS. The brigadier general has reported that 2 soldiers died of the winter flu today. I hope the mens family will take it O.K. It's hard to lose someone dear to you. I knew that as my grandma on my mother's side died. We all took it hard. But we pulled through and we continued with our lives again.
  • Journal Entry #106

I have gotten my 2nd letter from my folks back in New York City, New York. They had this to say... Dear Alan, We all hope you are having a good time down thier. We are doing fine up here. Father has gotten a raise at work. We needed a raise as the war makes the food a little more costly. We all hope you have a great February! Love, Mom, Dad, Caitlin, Max and Callie.
  • Journal Entry #107

Finally it is Febraury now. We are getting higher rations now. The ground is coverred in vile mud, And It's now getting a tiny bit warmer now. Thank God it isn't now Artic weather again. I hope more snow touches the ground for the rest of the month.
  • Journal Entry #108

Today is rainy but the rain is a nice and peaceful drizzle. At least it isn't clapping thunder and heavy rain is beating us without mercy. I wish the weather though can get a little better soon. Will it be sunny tommorow? Will it snow? Will it hail? Who knows? It's Wacky February!!
  • Journal Entry #109

Today is the perfect weather. Those are the days were is the perfect temperature, the sky is blue with no clouds in the sky and there is a very nice breeze that is absolutly nice. I played blackjack but I lost $5.00 sadly. I hope more days are like this. I want a major battle to be fought in this type of weather.
  • Journal Entry #110

Happy Valentine's day and all that other mushy stuff. Many taked about thier girlfiriend or wife over the campfire and how muchh they miss them. I do miss New York in Valentine's day. Sweets go on sale on that day and the are always delicous. I wish I could have just one piece of candy right now. When I think about them, my mouth startes to water. I want one so badly!
  • Journal Entry #111

We are just resting around the camp today. We are eating hardtack and dry fruit. The hardtack is getting dark again. I only eat the white. No black for me. I think it will be bad if you eat it. You may will be sick if you eat the dark spots. One corporal ate it all. God help him.
  • Journal Entry #112

Hiram Berdan has returned again. We were assiged our companies today. I was assigned Company A today. Company A has the best sharpshooters in the 1st USS. I'm pretty sure we will survive a lot of CSA soldiers. We are going to be unstoppable and we have Hiram Berdan as our commander. Get ready CSA. We are coming to win this war!
  • Journal Entry #113

Hiram Berdan has got the officers all together today. He talked about the Peninsula Campaign and how we are going to York County, Virginia. We are geting set and soon we will be heading off. Our job is to protect Yorktown and to keep it safe for a while. Hiram Berdan is calling me. I'm all set. Let's get heading to Yorktown Country!
  • Journal Entry #114

We are now in Yorktown. We are unpacking ammunition, supplies and soldiers. Many artilery men are pre-loading thier cannons and motors and are currently using telescopes to see if any CSA soldiers are approaching. They can warn us and tell infantry, calvary, and sharpshooters to start combat. I see nothing through my telescope. Who knows when they will get to Yorktown?
  • Journal Entry #115

Citizens are helping us. They are giving us supplies and also better shelter for us. They gave us home-made food. Hiram Berdan said that the citizens can help the infantry and the sharpshooters. They load the guns and they give us the loaded gun and we fire. We pass them back and we get another gun and repeat/ See? Hiram Berdan is a smart guy.
  • Journal Entry #116

We have heard news that the USS Monitor duked it out with the CSS Virginia. Weirdly enough, it was a draw. That's weird. I cannot see both sides throwing in the towel at the exact same time. I really do not get it at all. Oh well, I guess that is what happens sometimes.
  • Journal Entry #117

Many people are getting sick again. I'm starting to cough a lot now. I cannot get sick now! I need to be join forces when the battle begins. We will lose Yorktown Country if 100% of us is sick. It will be absolutly not be good if we are all sick. Getting sick stinks!
  • Journal Entry #118

Everyone is getting better now. 80% of all the soldiers are finally getting. I am part of that 80%. I'm relieved that I'm not sick. I hate the doctors. There "practice" doctors. So if I get the flu. My right leg goes? I don't even think they do not know what to do sometimes. Mom taught me what to do if I get sick. My mom knows about health and almost always know what is wrong with me when I get sick. She is a smart mother I tell you what.
  • Journal Entry #119

I sweaar I saw a CSA calvary man with my telescope. I hope it wasn't as that would be bad. 93% of our soldiers are all set. We need about 98% so we can fight and win. Some soldiers are in Yorktown buying food and getting souviniers for thier folks back at home. I'm saving my money though. I'll need it probably soon.
  • Journal Entry #120

I am currently eating my breakfast now. Soldiers are training. Drumboys are practicing and the bigwigs are talking about diffrent types of plans. Today is a perfect day though. The hardtack is getting more darker spots. Soon it will be 100% dark. Maybe soldiers will think it will be a thin plate of coal. Who knows?
  • Journal Entry #121

We found a American Revolutionary War battle site today near Yorktown. It was the final battle in the east. They said the bloodshed in this area was massive here. I can now see Americans and Britians fighting and dying. We are still waiting for the CSA to appear soon.
  • Journal Entry #122

We are now hearing druming now, the CSA now approaches! Cannons are ready now and every gun is loaded and ready to start firing. Let's do this! Bring it on CSA!
  • Journal Entry #123 *Siege of Yorktown 4/05/62*

We are near the defense wall of the CSA soldiers. Smoke is everywhere from cannons and the gunpowder. We are hearing ballistic gunshots near Lee's Mill. Those men will not let up all. The falling gunpower is like black ash. It's starting to sting my eyes. Some men are going commando and are stabbing CSA with thier bayonetts. Those men will not die. They are the beserkers of the Union Army.
  • Journal Entry #124 *Siege of Yorktown 4/09/62*

Soldiers are using dead bodies as shields now. The destruction now is huge. I'm telling some men what to do while I'm firing at the same time. We are making a little fort of dead bodies. There starting to rot cause of the blazing sun. Cannons shots are aiming to the left of us where some calvary are charging. We are giving it our all to play dead until a bigwig gives us further instructions.
  • Journal Entry #125 *Siege of Yorktown 4/12/62*

It is midnight and it is there is a small shower now. The muddy ground makes it very hard to walk. Firing of guns are still going on. A few minutes ago, a cannonball nearly hit me. We are in a abandoned farm right now. Some soldiers are in the chicken's nest getting some headshots. I'm getting tired but I must stay away!
  • Journal Entry #126 *Siege of Yorktown 4/15/62*

It's dawn and the motors are flying in the air without hesitation. I's very damp. The dew on the ground makes the grass shine. Soldiers are fighting as hard as they can. A calvary man fell off is horse dead. I took his saber and led men to a minute group of CSA infantry. They were massacred by us and incoming motors. I haven't came up with a name for my sword yet. I would want to call it Liberator or Confederate Slayer. I just don't know.
  • Journal Entry #127 *Siege of Yorktown 4/17/62*

We are near Warwick River where we are sniping of CSA soldiers. Soldiers keep on moving forward and cannons kept on getting closer. Are they soon going fall into the river? Who knows?
  • Journal Entry #128 *Siege of Yorktown 4/22/62*

It's quiet today actually, we are starving and the CSA are having food going spare. Some soldiers went undercover and got food for the Union Army. They dressed up as CSA soldiers and got food saying that thier regiment where dying of hunger. I thank them so much.
  • Journal Entry #129 *Siege of Yorktown 4/26/62*

We are doing good today! I got 3 kills and got 2 injured. We are pushing them back hard now. Let's hope to Lord Almighty that this battle will soon end. The "black ash" is now a minature storm now. The wind is very gusty making it a black hurricane. My eyes are stinging even more badder now. The only thing I'm scsred about if the CSA gets reinforcements soon. We would be slaughtered with ease!
  • Journal Entry #130 *Siege of Yorktown 4/30/62*

The sky is getting dark. Hopefully we won't be attacked with a thundershower or thunderstorm. We are in an abandoned house now. We are using some big wardrobes as barricades for the door. The house was near trees so we cut some tree branches and used them as barricades for the windows. We kept the 2nd florr windows open for sniping. We should be 100% safe for a while.
  • Journal Entry #131 *Siege of Yorktown 5/04/62*

The Confederates are retreating. Both sides have giant wagons that have soldiers that are firing motors. Calvary who are charge of the wagons are having a tough time controlling the horses. We are a fork in the road. The bigwigs said to split up and meet up at Williamsburg. Hopefully we will quickly leave the motors firing range soon.
  • Journal Entry #133 *The Battle of Williamsburg 2/2*

We made sure no CSA soldier would live. We killed multiple CSA men. We roared victorious and the drummer boys again played Yankee Doodle again. Now I'm in a wagon with other soldiers, talking about the sucesses of the battle. I can see the camp now. THis was a great day for the Union!
  • Journal Entry #132 *The Battle of Williamsburg 1/2*

We are heading back to a local camp. The battle at Williamsburg was a success to us. We came in at ready. Calvary dropped us off and got ready to fight. We "entered" the 2nd phase of Yorktown. Drummer boys were playing Yankee Doddle as we marched in. We saw the CSA soldiers and we opened fire. I was starving at this point but I was so occupied of fighting that I forgot about my hunger. The battle raged as cannons, rifles, motors, and bayonetts attacked. When the CSA started to retreat...
  • Journal Entry #134

The full moon shines on the campground today. The fire from torches and laters make the camp bright. Maybe a little too bright as the CSA could easily spot us if someone with a telescope saw the glimmer of light and wanted to make sure it was comrads. I'm getting ready to go to bed now. Hopefully we shall have another success for another day very soon.
  • Journal Entry #135

I got a message from a bigwig. It said that Hiram Berdan has made me a official 1st Lieutenant. Hiram Berdan telled me in the message that 1st Lieutenant supervise more. Soon I will get to lead a army of men against CSA. Maybe I will meet the great Robert E. Lee (even if he betrayed the Union.) It would still be amazing seeing him.
  • Journal Entry #136

A major told me that soon we will soon get going to Hanover County, Virginia very soon. He said that maybe there would be another battle very soon. Hopefully I do good for my first battle as a great 1st Lieutenant!
  • Journal Entry #137

We are now in Hanover County, Virginia now. We are preloading the cannons and also we are loading the guns and putting on our bayonnets. We have a grand total of 12,000 infantry, calvary, sharpshooters and artillery. I'm all set! I'm ready for action!
  • Journal Entry #138

We have achieved victory! The CSA had about 4,000 soldiers. We had a 6,000 soldier diffrence. We had about 800 K.I.A's and they had 930 K.I.A's The battle raged near a court house. The bloodshed was massive there. Soon the CSA retreated back. We are currently nursing the injured men for a bit. Hopefully we wil recover and pound them in the ground some more.
  • Journal Entry #139

We are nearing Henrico County, Virginia. Why are there so many Counties are here in Virginia? There York County, Hanover County, James City County, etc. I really don't get it at all. I also hope soon that the Peninsula Campaign will soon end forever as it's taking a millennium to me.
  • Journal Entry #140 *Battle of Seven Pines Day 1*

The Battle of Seven Pines has begun! Us and CSA are near Richmond, Virginia. We are blasting rifles, firing multiple cannons, shooting on horseback and even ripping out there organs with our bayonnets. There are actually doing the exact same thing. Intel came from a corproal and he said we had the same number of how many soldiers the CSA have. That number is 40,000. I still cannot see 80,000 soldiers fighting. This is now a massive battle now!
  • Journal Entry #141 *Battle of Seven Pines Day 2*

I don't know what happened at all. I got knocked out by a cannon shot. I started to wake up and I was being captured by CSA. Then I saw them get shot in the head. I then saw my old friends Nash, Kyril and Noland. I'm currently writing this in a hospital. I heard screams of agony. I still swear I saw them. The doctor said that I'll be better in 4 days. Thank god I'm not dead!
  • Journal Entry #142

I left the hospital and I saw my old friends!!! They got lost too and they joined the Battle of Seven Pines. I'm so happy that we are finlly reunited. Nash has became a major and Kyril and became a captain. Kyril began to grow a small goatee now and Noland is growing an hermit's beard. They got to keep there ranks just like me. I cannot wait to ge into the action with them again!
  • Journal Entry #143

Hiram Berdan has told me he transsfered me and my friends to the Army of the Potomac for a while. Our commanders he said will be George B. McClellan, Ambrose Burnside,
Joseph Hooker and George Meade. I know George B. McClellan as I saw him some times during some battles I fought. I cannot wait to fight soon side-by-side with four commanders and my three friends!
  • Journal Entry #144

I was talking with my frineds today. All 4 of us are happy we are finally reunited with each other again. They told me they were searching for me but my old regiment leder said that soon they would find me. They said they believe him and stayed with them. Then one day, a infantry of CSA men attacked thier camp and they got seperated during the skirmish. They searched for thier regiment and heard gun fire. They saw me fighting and getting struck and they saved me. I thank them so much.
  • Journal Entry #145

We are now at the eastern outskirt of Richmond, Virginia with George B. McClellan, my friends and other men of the Army of the Potomac. George B. McClellan said that Robert E. Lee has his own army, Army of Northern Virginia, that he worries about if they attack. I don't care at all, I want to be the one who kils or captures Robert E. Lee!
  • Journal Entry #146 *SEVEN DAYS BATTLES DAY 1*

We do no know who won today. We fought with Robert E Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. We also fought along sice with Samuel P. Heintzelman, but the CSA also had Benjamin Huger. We fought as strong as possible. Some soldiers got captured from our side but we got some of them. I think we lost as I think we got more losses then them. We had to pull back a bit. We will fight tomorrow!
  • Journal Entry #147 *SEVEN DAYS BATTLES DAY 2*

We have won today! Even though we got pushed back, we won by a "tactial win" as George B. McClellan puts it. We fought near the Chickahominy River today. Fitz John Porter also helped us today. We sadly had to abandon the Siege of Richmond, I do hope we will attack Richmond soon. The score is 1.5/0.5 now. The draw battle gave us and the CSA .5 I hope we will win soon.
  • Journal Entry #148 *SEVEN DAYS BATTLES DAY 3*

Today was a sad lose for us. Everyone including our great commanders, George B. McClellan and Fitz John Porter are sad too. Robert E. Lee must be very happy for his men of doing a good job. He had about 57,000 men at his command. He is a man you do not mess with or your getting your butt in big trouble. I want to be like him so badly! The score is now 1.5/1.5! We got hurt so bad that we are going to rest for a bit. We should recover soon.
  • Journal Entry #150 *SEVEN DAYS BATTLES DAY 5*

We have learned that the battle was a inconclusive. Now the score is now 2.5/2.5. We are still trying to recover sadly. Hopefully we shall recover soon shall we will fight again. It has been torture to all of us to not to do anything. Injured are being treated and George B. McClellan is still trying to get search parties to find war prisions. Maybe we will find one and we will do a jailbreak!
  • Journal Entry #149 *SEVEN DAYS BATTLES DAY 4*

We are currently waiting for more instructions from George B. McClellan as we set up camp near the James River. We heard news that battle has begun with the union having William F. Smith and Winfield S. Hancock and the CSA has John B. Magruder, Robert A. Toombs and George T. Anderson. It's still raging on he said. Hopefully we will win!
  • Journal Entry #151 *SEVEN DAYS BATTLES DAY 6*

We have heard another battle has happened with Union's Edwin V. Sumner and his men verses CSA's John B. Magruder and his men. The battle was found incolclusive sadly so now the score is 3.0/3.0. But we heard from George B. McClellan has gave good news. A man has found Robert E. Lee and his men without him being seen. We will get them now!
  • Journal Entry #152 *SEVEN DAYS BATTLES DAY 7*

Today was another inconclusive battle today. We also heard that another battle happened today. The total is now 4.0/4.0. The battle for us was a toughie. We are nearing a hill where Fitz John Porter is. Malvern Hill. This will deside the if the Peninsular Campaign and the thing George B. McClellan
calls the Seven Days Battles will be our victory or the CSA's victory!
  • Journal Entry #154 *SEVEN DAYS BATTLES DAY 8* (2/2)

hill and we ran to the River again. All the men of the Union are sad now. We must recover or this war is absolutly hopeless!!!
  • Journal Entry #153 *SEVEN DAYS BATTLES DAY 8* (1/2)

We have lost the Seven Days Battles. The Peninsula Campaign has ended and George B. McClellan has news for me, but I'll tell you tommorrow. Robert E. Lee and his men charged straight at us. (George B. McClellan telled us maybe he wanted his cannons to get more range so he can get a better hit at us). We fought very hard and we ended up winning. We though we won until after a few minutes after the battle, they came back with reinforcements and also with Stonewall's Calvary. We had to leave the...
  • Journal Entry #155

Now I will tell you what George B. McClellan had to say to me. He said to me that Hiram Berdan has moved me from him to John Pope. John Pope told Hiram Berdan that he needed a 1st Lieutenant for a plan called The Northern Virginia Campaign. Hopefully it will work and will not fail like the Pensisular Campaign did!
  • Journal Entry #156

I said goodbye to my friends and Hiram Berdan and George B. McClellan as I head out with John Pope and his men to a new campground. I cannot wait for my adventures with John Pope and the Northern Virginia Campaign!
  • Journal Entry #157

Me, John Pope and his men are now at a new campground. I already miss my friends, Hiram Berdan and even George B. McClellan. George B. McClellan taught me some commanding moves, Hiram Berdan gave me pride to be a sharpshooter and my friends helped me with combat. I miss them all!
  • Journal Entry #158

John Pope got all the men together to talk about the Northern Virginia Campaign. He said he heard about the sad loss of the Peninsula Campaign, so he gave a pep rally of how the Northern Virginia Campaign means a lot to him. He wants us to have the same determination he has right now. I want to help John Pope and my country. I'm ready to take on the Northern Virginia Campaign.
  • Journal Entry #159

John Pope has told me and the men that the Northern Virginia Campaign has begun. Robert E. Lee has control of the Army of Northern Virginia and he said that a spy has know that " Mr. Maj. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson is going to be at Culpeper County, Virginia. His big target is Cedar Mountain. We need to get to Culpeper County, Virginia first ASAP!
  • Journal Entry #160

We are still traveling to Culpeper County, Virginia. Bad weather is hurting our chances of getting to Stonewall Jackson forces and stopping them to getting to Cedar Mountain. I hope this bad weather will not destroy our chances of getting to Cedar Mountain first and also them not knowing we will be at Cedar Mountain.
  • Journal Entry #161

We are nearing Culpeper County, Virginia and getting closer to Cedar Mountain. Many men are wating for the staughter of Stonewall Jackson's forces. I cannot wait to see Stonewall Jackson again and ready to murder as many soldiers as fast of possible. We have a total of 8,030 men ready to get a headshot of Stonewall Jackson's face.
  • Journal Entry #162

We are finally in Culpeper County, Virginia and at Cedar Mountain. There is absolutly no sign of Stonewall Jackson or Robert E. Lee or any other CSA soldiers. We got here first and we are setting up camp. I cannot wait to fight CSA men once more!
  • Journal Entry #163

This a depressing day for the Union. We were slaughtered by about 16,900 CSA men. We were sent in a arc and we were ambushed by Stonewall's forces near Gordonsville. We went to protect Culpeper Court House which was 10 miles north of Gordonsville, but we lost Culpeper Court House sadly. We had to evacuate the area ASAP. I hope we will have our revenge against the CSA soon.
  • Journal Entry #164

We are hiding near Cedar Mountain. I thank god we lost Stonewall Jackson forces as they were on our tails. We are still setting up camp and hopefully we won't have another battle until we recover from the battle.
  • Journal Entry #165

John Pope said that we will get going to the Rappahannock River soon. The Rappahannock River is soon to be a battleground. I say that as John Pope said that. Hopefully we won't fight Stonewall Jackson or Robert E. Lee near the Rappahannock River or that would be pretty bad.
  • Journal Entry #166

Today we were fighting Stonewall Jackson again near the Rappahannock River today. John Pope is doing an excellent job of leading us against Stonewall Jackson's forces. Stonewall Jackson is a very strong man but I think John Pope is maybe stronger than Stonewall Jackson. The fighting went strong today. Battling will continue tommorow. I'm all set and ready to fight tommorow
  • Journal Entry #167

Today we fought near Waterloo Bridge. The battle near Waterloo Bridge was pretty epic if you ask me. We marched to Waterloo Bridge. Trying to dodge the lead bullets, we kept on getting closer until we found a sutable place to shoot. We found one soon and we pounded fire against the CSA. We kept on fighting till dusk and CSA started to move back. We should win if we keep up the good work.
  • Journal Entry #168

We are still fighting today. J.E.B. Stuart's calvary the other day are making it quite hard to move forward. Those men are brutes and will not go down without a fight. Hopefully we will survive another day if we get reinforcenments.
  • Journal Entry #169

Today we gave them all we got to dish out. We fought with all our might as we learned no reinforcements for us. We kept on fighting and each side kept on fighting. Both sides retreated as we fired motors as fast as possible. Did we win the battle or did the CSA win the battle? Who knows.
  • Journal Entry #170

We are now in Prince William County, Virginia. This bring me memories of the sad loss of The 1st Battle of Bull Run. I can still remember the beating we took. I wonder if a battle will happen again?
  • Journal Entry #171 *2nd Battle of Bull Run Day 1*

Battle has begun! We have a amazing total of 62,000 men and the CSA had about 50,000 soldiers. Today we attacked Brawner's Farm. Brawner's Farm was crawling with CSA soldiers. The CSA murdered us with thier cannons and motors. We are still going to fight tommorow though and we shall win!
  • Journal Entry #172 *2nd Battle of Bull Run Day 2*

We attacked Stony Ridge today. However, Stonewall Jackson was thier and he killed us. Stonewall Jackson is just like Robert E. Lee as you cannot do anything to stop him. He is an immortal man. We must win tommorow!
  • Journal Entry #173 *2nd Battle of Bull Run Day 3*

We lost The 2nd Battle of Bull Run. I cannot believe this! I'm so mad! I'm absolutly sick of losing now. We will need the death of Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson to win this war or we shall perish!!!
  • Journal Entry #173

We have lost the Northern Virginia Campaign. The Peninsula Campaign and the Northern Virginia Campaign are the exact same thing. They were failure campaigns. I'm going to be given bacj to Hiram Berdan though. I get to see my friends again!
  • Journal Entry #174

I'm now back at camp. My friends are quite depressed when I said that we lost the Northern Virginia Campaign. Hiram Berdan told me we are going to Sharpsburg, Maryland. Also going is George B. McClellan. Both Hiram Berdan and George B. McClellan are a dangerous duo. I cannot wait for more adventures. It will also put off the lose of Bull Run again.
  • Journal Entry #175

I am very happy to say that we are nearing Sharpsburg, Maryland. We are camping near Antietam Creek. I want to see Maryland again. My mom grew up in Sharpsburg, Maryland. I now Antietam Creek from the back of my hand. I want to enjoy the town again but this is war. If only we could enjoy something soon, even if we are in the Army.
  • Journal Entry #176

Antietam Creek is flowing very nicely. Antietam Creek is where I have memories of where we always stopped when we see our grandparents. The river always flowed like this when I was a child. I feel like I'm at peace somehow.
  • Journal Entry #177 *Battle of Antietam*

Today was a good day. We defeated CSA near Sharpsburg, Maryland. But the sight of the dead bodies were sickining. I feel like I was gonna vomit my hardtack as I saw a the blood. The bloodshed was so intense. I still trying to clean blood and gunpowder of my face. We won of a tatcical victory. George B. McClellan is a very smart men and Robert E. Lee must have been shocked when he saw 75,500 soldiers firing at his forces. I still hate all the destruction and bloodshed though today.
  • Journal Entry #178

We are getting back to Virginia. We are going to a camp near Fredericksburg, Virginia. We arn't going in but we will be hiding. I have actually forgotten Fredericksburg, Virginia though. I remember one of my uncles living a long time ago. Hopefully I will still remember it in the future.
  • Journal Entry #179

We are finally nearing Fredericksburg, Virginia. I do miss the good ol' Antietam Creek. I wish I could still be there some more. I guess I can survive without it. I hear the sounds of instruments being played by soldiers. This is cheering me up about Antietam Creek.
  • Journal Entry #180

We are eating food now. The hardtack is getting less dark spot. Still, they taste gross. Into the coffee it goes! We all want to eat something new as we are all sick of dried meat and hardtack. I would prefer fresh fruit like green apples. Those are the best dinner I would ever have in my entire life. Just green apples would be better than hardtack.
  • Journal Entry #181

It's starting to get fall here near Fredericksburg, Virginia. The air is crisp and nice. A beautiful sunset is now showing itself over the horizon. Today, soldiers came back with more supplies founded off of dead CSA naval soldiers. They also got more ammunation and more grade- A weapons too. They said there boat crashed 15 miles away from us. I'm happy we are finding supplies that we need. We were running out of ammo.
  • Journal Entry #182

Today was another average day. Just sitting around camp playing a tiny bit of poker. Whiff up some smokey air insted of fresh air. Listen of soldiers jamming thier hearts out on there gutairs. Today was good as we got new cadets. That is always good of still geting more cadets. More cadets mean more firepower we have.
  • Journal Entry #183

I swear today a saw a flake of snow. Today is cloudy and its about 36 degrees outside. Hopefully we won't get any snow until December as last time I don't to keep on praying for a dead body I find that has shoes that are in good shape or my parents giving me brand new shoes this year!
  • Journal Entry #184

The coldnees keeps on getting colder every day. Hiram Berdan and George B. McClellan demand higher rations and also new shoes and blankets. Nash told me this information. I'm happy that Nash is a Major so Me, Kyril and Noland can hear news from him. He always knows where Hiram Berdan or George B. McClellan is. He is our little spy if you ask me.
  • Journal Entry #185

Almost 100% of the trees have no leaves. Some soldiers hope that Robert E. Lee doesn't appear in a while. Hiram Berdan and George B. McClellan reassure them that they hope they don't see the likes of him again until he dies. If Robert E. Lee were to die at all, we would automatically win this horrible Civil War. I do not find anything good about this war. It will be total madness fixing America again. This not war, this is pure madness.
  • Journal Entry #186

George B. McClellan has given the proud news that Good Ol' Abraham Lincoln has gave us a bigger ration and also sending supplies ASAP for the cold winter approaching. THe men shouted like we just won a very major battle of this war. I cannot wait to stuff myself with a ton of food and drink it all down with a swig of coffee.
  • Journal Entry #187

We have finally gotten our rations and more supplies now. We took all the supplies in seconds. We unpacked it so fast our hands were tan blurs.I want eat all the dry meat so badly right now!
  • Journal Entry #188

Today is the end of October. It feels like minutes we were at October 1st and then we sped to the 31st. I cannot wait for more greatness in the 11th month. The cold and maybe snowy November!
  • Journal Entry #189

Today is the beginning of November. I cannot wait for all the oppertunities in this month. I'm pretty sure I will have fun during this month. Let's conqur November shall we?
  • Journal Entry #190

Today is actually a preety warm day. It is in the 50's but it's warm. I see storm clouds in the distince. Hopefully we will not have a storm. The last thing that needs to happenis a tornado and I HATE BAD WEATHER!
  • Journal Entry #191

Today is a very sunny day. There are few clouds in the sky and the sun blazes across the campgrounds. Many men are actually still sleeping. I want to grab a pot and pan and start banging them and shouting "EVERYBODY WAKE UP!" I do feel a tiny ill, but I'm fine. I shouldn't get the winter flu now in November. That would be very bad if the CSA show up and attack!
  • Journal Entry #192 *Fredericksburg Day 1*

The battle has begun! I used my telescope to see the CSA trying to evacuate the citizens as we don't any civillan deaths. The people of Fredericksburg will not go silently. Sometimes we have to kick down doors and get them by force. I do not want to do this to the town of Fredericksburg, they are destroying this city but it will get worse soon. Much worse.
  • Journal Entry #193 *Fredericksburg Day 2*

They have finally evacuated all the citizens of Fredericksburg. We cannot have our guard down now. Some Union vessels are now crossing the Rappahannock River. The Rappahannock River is quite strong now. We should all cross the Rappahannock River by dusk. For the meantime, we are sniping the stupid CSA soldiers. Gotta get back to sniping I guess.
  • Journal Entry #194 *Fredericksburg Day 3*

We are trying to get into Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg is protect by Robert E. Lee forces. It's almost impossible to get into Fredericksburg without getting shot. I don't even you can disguise yourself as a CSA soldiers as they will smell the Union on you. We keep on pushing harder and harder but they keep on coming and coming. If we reinforcements. We could actually capture Fredericksburg!
  • Journal Entry #195 *Fredericksburg Day 4*

We are being pounded by CSA forces right now. I do not even think we will get any reinforcements now. I think we will probably retreat soon.
  • Journal Entry #196 *Fredericksburg Day 5*

We have lost The Battle of Fredericksburg. I cannot we are on a losing streak right now First the Peninsula Campaign, then the Northern Virginia Campaign and the Battle of Fredericksburg. I'm sick of losing. We cannot lose this war or else America will be destroyed!
  • Journal Entry #197

It is now Thansgiving. We are in Deleware right now. Deleware is a nice state I have to admit. We are pitching in to find a Thanksgiving geese. I hope my family is having a good Thanksgiving in New York.
  • Journal Entry #198

It is Deccember now and snow is everywhere! My shoes are now new. I got them in a shop in a little town. They are nice and cozy. I gave my old shoes to Noland and he is currently wearing them right now. He said that they fit him perfectly. I happy he likes my old shoes and it will last them all of December.
  • Journal Entry #199

We are in town eating lunck right now. The food actually tastes better today. It didn't taste like garbage like it does. It tasted pretty good. I wish our lunches tasted like this every single time! We are going to take some privates for a very quick job after lunch. We do this as we want the soldiers to have some energy to do this jog.
  • Journal Entry #200

I cannot actually believe that this is my 200th Journal Entry. It feels like nanoseconds I just finish writing Joural Entry #100. I don't want this day to ever end as this day was the best. We got a wild geese and we ate it till we barfed. It was very good. I had a winning streak in blackjack and I got $90.00 dollars from it. I loved today so much!
  • Journal Entry #201

Merry Christmas to everyone in the world (except any CSA). This Christmas was better than the last one. I hope my family will have a great Christmas and a good Happy New Year! I also give this to my three good friends as well. I cannot wait for the New Year to began and start saying it is 1863!
  • Journal Entry #202

Today is a new year! I will kinda miss 1862 as there was some good things that happened this year. I cannot for more heart pounding action in this greaat year of 1863!
  • Journal Entry #203

Today is in the mid 20s. My shoes are all wet from walking in all the darn snow. It's very cold and men are freezing to death. I did heard that we will get more blankets soon. I hope this happens or we shall be in a big problem. We must survive until we get supplies!
  • Journal Entry #204

We have gotton our supplies. Thank God as I don't think we could even last a minute without more supplies. We got more supplies and we are thankful that we got more stuff. Blankets, guns, ammunition galore as we screamed with joy. I thank God and also President Abraham Lincoln for all this stuff.
  • Journal Entry #205

We are finding some food. We got some some geese and we are still trying to finding some more food. We have two groups. One goes to get meat and fruits and the other gets water. I'm in the wagon waiting the return of the groupps as we speak. It's getting quite cold out here and its nearing night. They must get here ASAP.
  • Journal Entry #206

We are eating geese and also drinking water. I want to see more creatures than rabbits, geese and many types of birds. I do want some action soon as doing nothing around camp is killing me. I'm ready to fight the CSA and I hope Robert E. Lee is ready to fight me!
  • Journal Entry #207

The moon shines upon the campgrounds. Men are talking about how long the war has been going. They say that they want to win some battles and not to lose them. I also hope we win some more battles. I cannot wait though until we win a major battle as that would mean that we will probably turn this darn war around!
  • Journal Entry #208

The snow is finally starting to melt thank god. We are so happy that the snow will soon be gone. I wish the snow would melt even more faster because we still got about 4 more inches of snow left to go.
  • Journal Entry #209

Finally it is Febuary in Deleware now. I want this darn war to just end. It's taking to long and it has almost been two years since this Civil War has began. I wish that soon that I will return to New York City where I'm with my family. I want to see them and my kind sister and also my two lovable dogs. I miss them a bunch.
  • Journal Entry #210

We are being careful as somebody sweared they saw a CSA soldier. I don't even want to think for a second that the CSA has gotten into Deleware. That would be a bad thing if they got into Union terittory. If they are into Union territory, we have to warn President Abraham Lincoln ASAP!
  • Journal Entry #211

We are still wondering if CSA are in Deleware. Protection of the camp is up 20%. We also have miniature groups that search 50 meters from the campgrounds for any CSA soldiers. We are soon going to start eating dinner in 45 minutes. I'm geting quite hungry and I want to get famished by dusk now.
  • Journal Entry #212

We have gotton news from Washington D.C that Deleware is 100% CSA safe. We cheered at this news given to us. I'm so relieved that no CSA are in Union Territory. If they were in the North, there would be a giant manhunt in the North.
  • Journal Entry #213

I had a dream. I saw me riding a horse and leading and army against Robert E. Lee and also Stonewall Jackson. We clashed and we won. All soldiers of the CSA got killed and the two generals ran away. I got out a pistol and shot the two. I became a hero and I became President Of The United States. I then awoke and I was quite sad. Oh well, I will be famous soon!
  • Journal Entry #214

The snow is finally all gone. But now we are walking in mud now. The mud can slow us down if we wre to have a battle. I highly doubt it though that we will have a battle at all. I just want to walk on plain grass, not this darn mud spreaded along the campgrounds! We are currently waiting orders also. I hope somthing big happens soon.
  • Journal Entry #215

Major General Joseph Hooker has told every one that we are still trying to capture Richmond, Virginia. Will it bomb just like the other four fail attempts of capuring Richmond, Virginia? Who knows as General Robert E. Lee isn't going to have Virginia going down without a bloody fight!
  • Journal Entry #216

We are exicted for a battle for Richmond, Virginia. I do think that we won't even get to Richmond. Again, Robert E. Lee isn't going to lose Virginia at all. He will kill anyone if it means to keep his Virginia safe from Union hands. I do think we will though win a battle, if even if we don't get to Richmond at all.
  • Journal Entry #216

It's the beginning of March now. The March weather is very nice. March seems nice as today is the perfect weather. I cannot wait for more March to come!
  • Journal Entry #217

Our rations are sadly getting smaller now. I saw some people fighting over who got more and who didn't at all. A tiny fight broke out and Nah had to calm down the minute brawlers. If our rations get even lower, it is not going to look pretty at all.
  • Journal Entry #218

We are eating some hardtack right now. The hardtack's dark spots are getting even bigger now. Soon they will probably be pitch black. Some people are getting sick by eating those dark spots. I do not even want to look at the vile food. It is starting to make me gag and I have horrible gag reflix!
  • Journal Entry #219

I hope March never ends as another perfect weather day has came upon us. I just want another perfect weather day as that would be so awesome to have 3 perfect weather days in one month. I want this weather if wee ever fight against the CSA. We will fight the CSA hopefully soon.
  • Journal Entry #220

The weather is quite warm today. I think it is in the mid-50s or somthing like that. The nice weather is perfect for training I tell you what. Hopefully it will cool down as I don't want hot weather anytime soon!
  • Journal Entry #221

The weather is getting colder now, but not by much. The weather is in the 40s. We are seeing more wild animals now. A load of them were probably sleeping during the winter. That would be awesome if I could sleep during a season. I would sleep through summer as the hotness can get insane and I hate the heat to the absolute max!
  • Journal Entry #222

I don't want April to begin as we had so much good weather and we had little rain. I don't want to have bucket loads of rainfall and hot April weather. I guess though that the war shall end soon in April. So I guess I have to persevere through April and maybe this drawn out war will end for my happieness.
  • Journal Entry #224

April has now begun. I will miss March very much for godd weather. I will miss it very much now as It's raining cats and dogs outside right now. I'm in my tent and I hope it willbe able to survive this brutal weather. I don't want to bunk with another soldier anytime soon!
  • Journal Entry #225

The sun is now glowing in my tent. It's very hot and I fell like I'm cooking alive! I need water or something bad will happen soon. We are running low on water and many men are going to get some. I hope they start sprinting soon as I feel like I'm gonna die!
  • Journal Entry #226

We are soon going to get more information of what we are going to do soon. Hopefully we will get fighting soon because my mind is soon going to explode from boredom very soon.
  • Journal Entry #227

We, The 1st st United States Volunteer Sharpshooter Regiment are going to help out the Army of Potomac and some of the Corps soon. I cannot wait to do some more fighting. But we need more supplies like new, fresh uniforms, some more blankets and also some better tents (as the tents are getting battered from here in Deleware.) I hope we get some more supplies soon as I do want to be promoted to Captain ASAP!
  • Journal Entry #228

We are almost ready to start fighting, I'm getting pre-packed and I am so psyched for more action in April and also it can lead into May. Bring on the CSA soldiers for me to shoot!
  • Journal Entry #229

We are heading out for our location of Spotsylvania County, Virginia. I cannot wait for adveture again in Virginia (and I don't have any sarcasm.) I do like Virginia even if it is quite ridiculous that we keep on going there a lot. I want to have some action very soon!
  • Journal Entry #230

We hear drumming near the village of Chancellorsville. The village of Chancellorsville is in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. We should cross paths with the CSA men tommorow. Let's win this battle!
  • Journal Entry #231 *Chancellorsville Day 1*

We are having a little trouble against the CSA forces today. Robert E. Lee is leading his forces. Hooker is leading us against Robert E. Lee. We arn't going so good. We are giving them all we got but they are very strong men. It's going on so battle will happen tommorow. We should be good tommorow, maybe today was just not our day.
  • Journal Entry #232 *Chancellorsville Day 2*

General Stonewall Jackson has now entered the battle! He is flanking us and if he is going to flank us some more, we are going to be in a major heap of trouble. We are soon going to be circled around CSA soldiers attack us in all diffrent directions. We must survive and hopefully we will get reinforcements.
  • Journal Entry #233 *Chancellorsville Day 3*

The battle has came into the village of Chancellorsville! After today, the city in my eyes was in ruins as from all the bloodshed and artillery fire that happened in this village. Many CSA soldiers are pounding on us right now so it is quite hard to write in this journal while motars are flying and exploding near you so I'll write more tommorow as my fellow comrads need my help right this very minute.
  • Journal Entry #234 *Chancellorsville Day 4*

We are still fighting very hard. But sadly, we heard no reinforcements for us. Union forces are starting to withdraw. I cannot believe we are going to lose the battle of Chancellorsville right now! We must fight to the end even if we go into total annihilation!
  • Journal Entry #235 *Chancellorsville Day 5*

We are losing even morce forces. I think that we will have to leave tommorow as if we lose even more, we will have to leave as we would not be able to hold out much longer. But we must keep hope and fight even if we get annihilated by CSA soldiers.
  • Journal Entry #237 *Chancellorsville Day 6*

We have lost! We MUST win a battle to show we are strong. Those CSA men must perish! WE MUST WIN A MAJOR BATTLE! Or else, we will never win god forsaken civil war or this nation will be destroyed and chaos will spread all around the USA!
  • Journal Entry #238

We are soon heading to a new campground near Gettysburg. It is going to be nearby Devil's Den. Scary name if you ask me. I felt a siver down my spine as I think something crazy is gonna happen at Gettysburg very soon! I have great news to add to this journal entry. General Stonewall Jackson has been killed by Union forces! Men are cheering and drummers boys are playing wildily. I cannot believe we killed a CSA general! Kudos to the men who killed Stonewall Jacksoon!
  • Journal Entry #239

Today was good weather for May. The wind was a little more gusty but I was O.K with that. We are in Adams County, Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is nice during May I tell you what. But we are not near Gettysburg. We are waiting for further instructions of what will happen for us next.
  • Journal Entry #240

We are still waiting if we should get going to Gettysburg soon. Hopefully we will just pass through Gettysburg and leave it. Union bigwig say that Gettysburg is our last hope. We lose Gettysburg, and it is all over for the Union, we lose te Civil War and we will lose the control of the South. WE MUST WIN!!!
  • Journal Entry #241

No further information yet of should we advance to Gettysburg. We are just sitting tight right now and just beging for further information of to do. I want to start to head out to Gettysburg ASAP. But I know what the bigwigs and President Abraham Lincoln is doing and I must keep faith with those men.
  • Journal Entry #242

We have finnaly gotton a message to pack our bags and head out to Gettysburg ASAP. I cannot wait to see Gettysburg and all it's glory. I cannot wait to see all the locals and probably I wil get a souvinier to take home with me. But I just hope we don't cross paths with CSA.
  • Journal Entry #243

We are now at Gettysburg and inside the city. But there is a problem. A HUGE problem. General Robert E. Lee is coming and he is coming fast. He wants to end this war right now! We are evacuating citizens as Gettysburg is going to be a absolute warzone soon. I never wanted this to happen, but it is. Three words. Bring It On!!!
  • Journal Entry #245 *BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG DAY 1 (2/2)*

Are picking off the CSA soldiers. Our bullets are like lighting bots and we are striking down upon them. A general has told us to starting to go south to Devil's Den as some CSA soldiers are approaching thier. To Devil's den we go! We should be there by tommorow.
  • Journal Entry #244 *BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG DAY 1 (1/2)*

It has now begun! Bullets are screaming towards us and buttets are screaming torwards them. The cannon fire between us and the CSA is massive. I swear that my ear drums will break from all of this sound. The city is taking a absolute beating from all of this fire. Fighting on the streets are huge rright now. Me and some other soldiers on the roof near Kyril. Kyril and his forces are like ghosts as the are always vanishing in the battle and reappering in a other building. We are up high and we...
  • Journal Entry #246 *BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG DAY 2*

We defeated some soldiers ner Devil's Den. This place wasa perfect arena for sharpshooters. We kept on fighting and we kept on kiling those CSA men. I think tommorow we will actually win this battle!
  • Journal Entry #247 *BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG DAY 3*

We have won! Men are cheering in the streets about this! I cannot we won this battle. I think we turn this terrible war around and we will win! All hail the Union forever!
  • Journal Entry #248

Today is July here in Gettysburg. We are protecting the city if any CSA try again to take Gettysburg ever again. We will soon go into action again soon though. Me and my friends are still talking about the battle of Gettysburg. I still cannot believe we won it. Again, we might be able to turn this war around and we can win it and make the USA whole again!
  • Journal Entry #249

Today it is my sisters birthday. I do wish all my wishes to my parents, my dogs and of course, my sister Caitlin Deuchert's birthday.
  • Journal Entry #250

Today is my 20th birthday! I cannot believe I'm 20 years old today. I now feel quite old sadly, but my sister is 22, so I shouldn't get sad right now. I cannot wait for my 21st birthday as wel, but I will get more older. I wish I was an immortal man as I could be in the line of fire, and go commando and kill everyone with my bayonet! That would be totally awesome!
  • Journal Entry #251

It is quite cold outside. The trees are starting to lose all of thier leaves. I don't want it to snow again as my shoes can be destroyed by the snow and the icy weather.I\ It would suck if I will have to get new shoes again as I don't want to waste more money anymore! I cannot believe also no battling for us. I find that quite nice that we arn't fighting. I want to have no fighting at X-Mas for three years!
  • Journal Entry #252

It is finally November, we are just eating our food right now and the weevils are getting worser in the hardtack. This means I'm eating less hardtack and that means that I will probably enter starvation if the weevil infested hardtack goes a little bit more down in infection of the hardtack.
  • Journal Entry #253

We have just heard President Abraham Lincoln talk about Gettysburg and this whole Civil War. This speech was very good. I think this speech will go down through history as one of the greatest speeches in the whole world!
  • Journal Entry #254

Today is X-Mas. I got in the mail $50.00 from my folks at New York City. I spent it on a extra pair of shoes and I also got a souvinier to give to my folks at home for all the love and support they gave to me in this war so far. I will send it to them soon. I need to find something to wrap it with or if would put in a crate to send it off to them. If I don't get those stuff, I will have to give it to them in person.
  • Journal Entry #255

Today it is the beginning of the year 1864. I cannot believe it will be almost 4 years since I signed into the army. I do wish this will end very soon. But we are still doing good, so we must win this war ASAP!
  • Journal Entry #256

Febuary weather is now suddently nice now. There is absolutly no snow on the ground right now. I cannot believe that this weather is actually good right noe. I hope the weather will never be bad ever again as long as I exist in this world. I do wish we will fight soon though. I cannot wait to fight again in this good year of 1864.
  • Journal Entry #257

We are waiting for orders right now. I do want to fight and lead some men right now. But we need to know where CSA will strike, so I guess we can wait a little bit more. But only for a bit.
  • Journal Entry #258

We have been given orders to head out to Richmond, Virginia and to get it, but we will probably get ambushed by Robert E. Lee again. I hope we don't see the likes of him again anymore. But if we do need to fight him again, I am O.K. with that. But Robert E. Lee fights are becoming too tedious. We should win, I hope.
  • Journal Entry #259 *Battle of the Wilderness Day 1*

Today we fought near Orange Turnpike today. We both (tus and the CSA) had a good chance of losing today. But we kept on fighting hard so we could win this battle eventually . We have no idea how long this battle will even last. My guess is about a week or maybe just a few days as you never know if reinforcements come in and the battle would get shorter at all.
  • Journal Entry #260 *Battle of the Wilderness Day 2*

We are still fighting right now. The gunfire is making my eardrums and also the cannons and horses screaming in terror is adding to the pleasure of my eardrums. We are in a big struggle to push those CSA men backwords and our goal is to get to Virginia. We are still firing and the CSA are trying to deliever a punishment if we try to push them back just for one little centimenter. We should win or even worse, lose tommorow.
  • Journal Entry #261 *The Battle of the Wilderness Day 3*

The Battle of the Wilderness was an inconclusive battle, but we are still fighting strong. I hope we will capture Richmond soon. We are still pushing them as we speak, we are pushing them to Spotsylvania Court House. We should kill them all there. TO SPOTSYLVANIA COURT HOUSE WE GO!
  • Journal Entry #262

We are fighting Spotsylvania Court House and progress is going good here. We are fighting still. I feel somthing warm trickiling down my arm... Oh, no.
  • Journal Entry #263

I am sad to say that I'm in the hospital right now. I was shot in the arm. Thank god it was the left as I write with my left. It's quite hard to write with one hand right now. My arm didn't have to be cut off. I swear the pain you will go through when they are digging through your arm, trying to get the ball out will hurt like breaking a bone right in half with a axe. A nurse told me I have to be given Morphene soon. She said that it will help make the pain from the surgery be gone. GIVE ME IT!
  • Journal Entry #264

I am sorry that I haven't been writing. For 5 days, I was high on that morphene. That stuff is INSANE. That stuff will not cure the pain, it will just make you think you don't any pain at all. You can get hit by a swinging carrage and not even feel a darn thing. You are invinceable when you are on morphene. I swear to Lord Almighty I saw my family right before my very eyes. I NEVER WANT THAT STUFF AGAIN! I in so much pain right now. I feel like I'm gonna die!
  • Journal Entry #265

I am being released from the hospital today. I have heard that the Spotsylvania Court House battle has ended and it was also inconclusive too. I got a letter that we I'm being sent to soon to Cold Harbor from Kyril. I cannot wait too be in action with my friends again!
  • Journal Entry #266 *Cold Harbor Part 1*

Cold Harbor is under way! Robert E. Lee is leading the CSA forces (are you really surprised?) and they are just kicking our butts right now. We have more forces than them but that doesn't matter as 1 Robert E. Lee = 1,000,000 soldiers. We are trying everything in the book but they will just not budge at all. We should win though as we are the great Union and Union beats CSA anytime!
  • Journal Entry #267 *Cold Harbor Part 2*

We are fighting in the night. We need more light as the moon isn't so good. I wish I was a cat as I heard that cats have good vision in the night. We are trying to light uo torches. My idea is to nail some wood in the ground and light it so we can see what we are doing and we don't load our guns the wrong way. I do think my idea will help us.
  • Journal Entry #268 *Cold Harbor Part 3*

We have sadly lost Cold Harbor. We tryed hard but sadly we lost. We have gotton a new assignment though, we are going to Petersburg. We also heard that Robert E. Lee is going to go to Petersburg too. We must end this war now as this war will just last even longer. We must win!
  • Journal Entry #269 *PETERSBURG PART 1*

We are in Petersburg. The battle as been going on since the 9th. We are doing better than what we did in Cold Harbor. We are fighting and we are doing quite good. But they are pounding them and injuring us hard. But then we are also pounding them and injuring them hard as well. This is gonna be a very long battle!
  • Journal Entry #271 *PETERSBURG PART 2*

We are still trying to get Petersburg but it isn't working so good. We are trying to get in but there is like an infinite number of soldiers and you cannot get in at all. It is 100% closed off. We are attacking at a range and they must be a hawk hybrids as they see us all the time. We are waiting for further instructions right now as getting into Petersburg isn't gonna work until we have more men and we need get thier attention off of Petersburg.
  • Journal Entry #272 *PETERSBURG PART 3*

We are still trying to get the traintrack plan to work. We are getting kicked around by CSA forces. We are still battling with all of our strength, but we aren't doing so good. We could probably win though, but it would be a long shot!
  • Journal Entry #273 *PETERSBURG PART 4*

The train track plan bombed. But we are still trying to stop any CSA reinforcements from getting here into Petersburg. Men were fighting today and it didn't work today. General Grant is going to fight at the Crater. We are to be there soon. TO THE CRATER!
  • Journal Entry #273 *PETERSBURG PART 5*

The battle has failed. The cannon fire from the CSA cannons was collosal. We were slaughter out there. Let us all hope we will recover and survive this battle and win it!
  • Journal Entry #274 *PETERSBURG PART 7*

We are battling near the Crater battlefield. We are punishing them, but not by a lot. But we are still trying our best. We are pushing them, but they push back. We probably are going to retreat soon as the "punishment" is getting softer.
  • Journal Entry #275 *PETERSBURG PART 8*

Today is my sister, Caitiln's birthday. Her birthday makes me happy as my siter is older, but I start to feel homesick. I miss petting my little dog, Callie and talking with my folks. I cannot wait to be back in New York City with my family. I miss them so much!
  • Journal Entry #276*PETERSBURG PART 9

We cut off Weldown Railroad. That will help us with CSA soldiers not getting a lot of supplies now. They can get less gunpowder, less ammunition and less supplies lke food and water. I do hope we will destroy more railroads!
  • Journal Entry #277 *PETERSBURG PART 10*

We have gotton rid of more of the Weldon Railroad. We attacked but we sucked out loud. But we managed to get more on the Weldon Railroad. I hope we destroy 100% of all railroads in this area so no supplies can be given to CSA, which would mean that the would surrender when the learned that the have no way to get supplies. We must destroy the railroads ASAP!
  • Journal Entry #278 *PETERSBURG PART 11*

It is finally the end of August. I cannot wait as my birthday will appear soon! I do hope that soon The Siege of Petersburg as this will take forever if we or them a ton of supplies. Hopefully it will be the CSA as this will probably affect the end of the war!
  • Journal Entry #279 *PETERSBURG PART 12*

I'm sorry I couldn't write in the journal for Setember 1st as we fought against some artillery today. I didn't want to lose a arm or a leg during that time. We kept on shooting but my aiming was quite bad. It just not my day I guess.
  • Journal Entry #280 *PETERSBURG PART 13*

Today we were sniping near Boydton Plank Road. We were trying to get it but those CSA soldiers. Those CSA men will not even us take Boydton Plank Road at all. The want to defend Boydton Plank Road with all of thier lifes. It didn't work sadly.
  • Journal Entry #281 *PETERSBURG PART 14*

Today is November 1st. The wind is quite cold today. It is hard to shoot while you are shooting and you are shivering at the exact same time. We were battling hard today and my aim was still not good at all. I hope my aim will get better soon.
  • Journal Entry #282 *PETERSBURG PART 15*

We are currently waiting for our food right now. We heard gunshots and cannon fire. I hope they do not think about ambushing us right now. I just want to drink some coffee as that will probably help me get warm fast. I cannot wait for more battling tommorow though!
  • Journal Entry #283 *PETERSBURG PART 16*

Merry Christmas Boys and Girls! We are still battling hard and strong. I do wish that for just one Christmas we can stop fighting for one second and just be in peace and not fire our guns. It's a very special day. I think we should be able just to stop firing. I hope we will end this war in 1865!
  • Journal Entry #284 *PETERSBURG PART 17*

I am very sad to say that 1st United States Volunteer Sharpshooter Regiment has now been not active today. I have joined the Army of the Potomac. I got into the II Corps with my commander Winfield S. Hancock. I cannot wait for more action in the II Corps and another good thing is that my friends are following me in my journey with another regiment. But I will miss my times with The 1st United States Volunteer Sharpshooter Regiment.
  • Journal Entry #285 *PETERSBURG PART 18*

It is now 1865! My resolution is to finish this Civil War once and for all! This year and very soon! I just want this war to end and this has been almost 4 more years from the attack on Fort Sumter and the beginning of this Civil War. I'm ready to finish this fight and this war!
  • Journal Entry #286 *PETERSBURG PART 19*

We were near Hatcher's Run. We lost sadly, but we are still trying everything in the book to get into Petersbutg and take it from Robert E. Lee's cold fingers!
  • Journal Entry #289 *PETERSBURG PART 20*

We have officialy won the battle of Petersburg today. Men screamed with absolute joy about the win of Petersburg, we didn't get Petersburg or Richmond, but we will get it soon!
  • Journal Entry #290

We are trying not to get Lee to escape from our vision. We are going to soon strike Petersburg again and Grant will chase Robert E. Lee to the end. We are setting up camp near Petersburg. Our goal? Capture Petersburg and Richmond!
  • Journal Entry #291

We are currently waiting for news of Grant vs Robert E. Lee. We are just hanging around the camp and waiting for orders. I do hope Grant will be able to stop Robert E. Lee as soon as possible. I really want to finish this war right now!
  • Journal Entry #292

  • Journal Entry #293

We are eating our dried meat and hardtack. I'm not eating my hardtack as now its 100% dark. I refuse to eat it at all. I cannot to eat good food and not these rations anymore!

  • Journal Entry #295

We are eating a preety good meal today. The hardtack is quite nice. The hardtack had 0% weviils in it. The meat tasted very good actually. It had a nice taste to it. I want some action very soon or I will crack!

  • Journal Entry #297

We have won the battle today. We battled fierce and strong. We broke into Petersburg and we slaughter many CSA soldiers. Robert E. Lee is retreating to the West. Grant and others are chasing after them. We are here inside the destructed town of Petersburg, waiting for them to surrender. We will go on a rampage if they don't surrender by next dawn!
  • Journal Entry #298

They have gave up Petersburg to us! Soon, we got news that we have gotton Richmond as well, we cheered and we were dancing around the destructed city. We will wait for more orders from Grant very shortly.
  • Journal Entry #299

We are heading to Appomattox County to end this war. When we got this news, we were like we found a whole island made of gold. We were so happy to here that this war will finally end. To Appomattox County we go!
  • FINALE!

This is my last journal entry! We got to Appomattox County. We got to the house and I standed by the door with a lot of other soldiers. I got up close to see Grant. We waited and waited and waited until we heard footsteps. I opened the door and I saw Robert E. Lee right in front of me. He said said "Thank You." I smiled and he left . Grant came out and said. "This war is over!" We screamed with joy. I'm being sent home. I said good-bye to everyone. Well, let's get going to New York City!
