    Pope clement V

    Pope Clement V moved the papacy and his residence to Avignon, a city just outside French territory on the Rhone River. This allowed Phillip the Fair, King of France, to exert a great deal of influence over the pope.

    Pope Gregory XI moved the papacy back to Rome

    Pope Gregory XI made a significant move and returned the papacy to Rome.
    When he died the new italian pope was elected. Though the french did not like him so they electedtheir own pope.

    The Roman king

    The Roman king did not like the Italian pope, so he elected one of his own. There were two popes now claiming athority over the church.

    The Council of Constance

    The schism in western Christendom was finally healed at the Council of Constance.The Catholic world now had a single head based in Rome, The religion became Roman Catholic.
