  • Sand River Convention

    The Sand River Convention was a convention where Great Britain formally recognised the independence of the Transvaal Boer republic that had been established beyond the Vaal River. In return, the Boers promised that slavery would be outlawed in the Transvaal and that they would not interfere in the Orange River Sovereignty's affairs. The convention was signed on 17 January 1852 by Andries Pretorius (for the Boers) and William Hogge and Mostyn Owen (for Great Britain).

    Erasmus Jacobs discovered diamonds in South Africa at Kimberley. This discovery caused a massive rush on forreigners to the Orange Free State.
  • Transvaal Recognized

    The Transvaal (Afrikaans meaning beyond the Vaal River) is the name of an area of northern South Africa. This land was comprised of the independent Boer South African Republic, which had existed since 1856, despite two previous failed attempts by the British to establish their supremacy.
  • 1877 Annexation

    The British wanted to annex South Africa. There were three prime factors: 1) Control of the trade routes to India that passed around the Cape; 2) the discovery in 1868 of huge mineral deposits of diamonds in the Transvaal, Orange Free State and the Cape Colony 3) the race against other European colonial power. The Brisith wanted control of the wealth.

    Rebellion of the Boers against the British. Also known as the Transvaal Rebellion.

    The Conference, precided over by Otto von Bismark, was convened to draw boundaries between the European powers. Ended February 26, 1885
  • Discovery of Gold in South Africa

    Gold was discovered in the Witwatersrand area of the South African Republic. This made the Transvaal Gold made the Transvaal the richest and potentially the most powerful nation in South Africa. Manpower was not available to mine the massive quantities of gold.
  • Zulu Land is a separate British Colony

    A historical region of northeast Natal province in South Africa. This land was originally settled by the Zulus, It was annexed by the British in 1887.
  • Second Boer War starts

    The Second Boer war begins.
  • British occupy Bloenfontein

    At 10:00 am, British forces marched into Bloemfontein, the capital of the Orange Free State, and took possession. When the soldiers entered the city at noon, he was cheered by the conquered Boers.

    The Treaty of Vereeniging also known as Peace of Vereeniging ended the Second Boer War between the South African Republic and the Republic of the Orange Free State, on the one side, and the British Empire on the other This settlement provided for the end of hostilities and eventual self-government to the Transvaal (South African Republic) and the Orange Free State as colonies of the British Empire. The Boer republics agreed to come under the sovereignty of Great Britain.
