    The colonization was led by Portugal. European leaders also came.They were in search of spices and other goods.

    Ferdinand Magellan's discovery
    They reached the Philippines and claimed the island from Spain. Spaniard came to colonize, trade and spread Roman Catholicism. The religion in Southeast Asia has remained the same since this event happened.

    1600-1700s: The Dutch drove Portuguese out of their homeland of Portugal. Portugese kept small island called Timor. Dutch became in control and became the Dutch East Indies which is now Indonesia.

    AD 800- mid 1200s: Khmer controlled large empire, which now is Cambodia. Also, it is the most advanced region, in that early civilization. The remains of their huge temple are still in that very spot where the mediated.
