    During this time, Europe started colonizing Southeast Asia. The European powers were led bo Portugal. They originally came in search of spices and other trade goods.

    Ferdinand Magellan's discovery
    Ferdinand Magellan was the one who reached the Phillipines and claimed them for Spain. After it was claimed to colonize and trade. They also spread Roman Catholicism, which is still there today.

    Dutch traders drove the Portugese out of most of the Philippenes. The Portugese kept only the small island of Timor. This allowed the Dutch to take control of the trade routes.

    During the1800s, the French and British set up colonies with plantations, railroads, and mines. To work these colonies, many Chinese and Indians moved there. The French and British also took this chance to spread Christianity.

    The Khmer is the region's most advanced early civilzation. Khmer controlled a large empire that is now Cambodia. Remains of a huge temple called Angkor Wat can be seen today.
