    Indian government believed that helping with the war effort would help reinforce the idea of Indian self-government. The Indian Army outnumbered the British Army at the beginning of the war with about 1.3 million Indian soldiers and laborers serving in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Casualties of Indian soldiers totaled 47,746 killed and 65,126 wounded during WWI. Britain refusing to grant self-government to India after the end of hostilities, fuelled the campaign for full independence.
