    Gold

    Gold drew Europeans to Africa, just as it had drawn Arab traders.

    Atlantic Slave Trade

    The trans-Saharan trade had long included enslaved people.

    African Traders

    They began selling enslaved people for guns and other European goods.
  • 1503

    Building

    In the early 1500s the Europeans had built trading post on the African coast
  • Moving Land

    Britain, France, Germany, and Portugal set up colonial rule along the west coast and then moved farther inland.
  • Colonizing

    Belgium colonized a large region of Central Africa.
  • South and East Africa

    Were also colonized as early as the 1600s
  • Dutch and British

    Dutch and British trading companies built supply posts for traders traveling to Asia

    By the early 1800s Europeans Power began actively colonizing Africa.

    By 1900, European nations had divided most of Africa into colonies.

    They gained there Independence in 1910.

    They were the only country that was never colonized it was invaded though by Italy in the 1930s
  • Suffering

    Many Africans suffered under colonial rule. Some last their land, and others were forced to work for little or no pay.
  • Africans fighting back

    When they fought back against colonizers, they were quickly defeated by the Europeans modern weapons.

    They made positive changes by outlawing slavery and introducing modern health care. They improved transportation, but mainly to help them ship natural resources to Europe. They also built schools to give Africans access to education.
