    • British were supplying guns and amunition to the Navitive Americans

    • If Britin and France didn't stop siezing American ships, then the Americans would stop trading with the other nation
    • France was respectful so America still traded with them, but every shipment to Britin was stopped

    In 1811, Britin blockaded American ports to stop us from trading with France
    * British still boarderd American ships and impressing all on board
    * A breif battle brokeout and left 32 dead or wounded British soldiers
    * War Hawks told congress to prepare for war
    * Someone said he wants to win additional land for the U.S.(Flordia)
    * Madision gave into war fever in June 1812, he asked congress to declare war with Britin
    * America soon found out winning a war wasn't as easy as declaring it

    * The British were locked in a struggle with Nepolean
    * British couldn't spare any troops
    * American only had 16 warships to fight with, and a small army
    * Young men enlisted early for a higher pay of $124, but they were poorly trained

    Britin Blockades American Ports
    • Americans were confident that they would win the war
    • Jefferson's military cuts weakend the American military
    • Only 16 warships were ready
    • The American military had less then 7,000 men
    • British blockaded the American coast, 135 warships blocked the coast
    • By the end of the war all American ports were closed
    • The USS Constitution defeated the British warships in a feirce battle
    • The sailors thought the USS Constitution had iron sides
  • Invasion of Canada

    • William Hull moved American troops from Detroit to Canada
    • Canada had very few and untained troops
    • The Canadians were lead by General Isaac Brock, a very clever and skillful leader
    • The Americans attcked 3-4 times
    • Canadians won every time, sending the Americans to retreat

    • Fierce battle against the British, the USS Constitution won
    • "Old Ironsides"
    • It was a majore sea battle
    • The US was unprepared for war
    • Jefferson's cuts made it harder to fight with under 7,000 men
  • Battle Of Lake Erie

    • Americans wanted control of Lake Erie
    • Captin Oliver Hazard Perry designed and built his own ships
    • The British battered Perry's own ship
    • Perry took his flag down and went to another American Ship
    • After he got to the ship he raised his flag again and fought more
    • Americans won, Perry said " We have met the enemy and they are ours"
  • Battle Of Thames

    • British and Tecumseh retreated from Detroit into Canada
    • Native Americans and the British lost contol of Lake Erie *America won and won control of Lake Erie
    • Tecumseh died in the war fighting
    • The Indian confederation fell apart without Tecumseh
  • Warhawks Take Power

    • People wanted to restore trade with Britin
    • Congress called for war with Britin
    • Strong sence of nationalism was found in Americans
    • Americans were trated like they were still British colonys
    • The Americans to go to war to defend American rights

    • Tecumseh the American leader died at war, Then the troops fell apart
    • Andrew Jackson took Tecumseh's place as commander
    • The Americans won and got all of the Native American land
    • Then the Native Americans lost control of Lake Erie
    • Then the Americans Retreated from Detroit to Canada

    • Summer 1814 British ships sailed in Chesapeake Bay
    • Invsion force 30miles (118km)
    • The Americans met the British at Bandensburg, Maryland
    • Madison votched the battle himself
    • Battle hardend and the British quickly scattered the untraiined Americans
    • After the battle the British continued to march to the capitial
  • Attack on Baltimore

    *First objective was Fort Mchenry
    *September 13, 1814 the British war ships bombareded the fort
    *Fransis Scottt Key watched the attack
    * At dawn the American flag was still hanging outside the fort
    * Fransis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner as a poem and when it was popular in 1931 then someone put it to music and America adopted it as the national anthem

    *When the fog lifted the " broad stripes and bright stars"of our flag still waved over Fort McHenery
    *The British went away and back to Britin
    *Fransis Scott Key witnessed the battle and wrote a poem
    * The poem was eventually put to music
    * America adopted it as our national anthem
  • Hartford Convention

    • Critics of President Madison spoke out more strongly
    • New Englanders disliked the war, blockade damage north east trade
    • New England wanted to withdraw from the US
    • The war ended quickly
    • The war was called the "Second War Of Independence"
  • Treaty of Ghent

    The Traty of Ghent was signed on December 24th of 1814
    * Nothing was settled but things were adjusted
    * British agreed to restore prewar conditions
    * Nothing about impressment or neutrality, issues faded after Napoleonic wars with Europe
    * Americans and the British thought the war of 1812 was a mistake
    * We had new pride in our country, our Republican leader remarked "the people are now more American. They feel and act more as a nation
  • Battle Of New Orleans

    *On January 8th of 1815 the British attacked New Orleans
    *Many people from New Orleans joined the army to fight for there state
    * They dug trenches to protect themselves
    *When the British attacked over 2,000 British men died
    * Only 7 Americans died
    *Signed a treaty and Andrew Jackson was a hero
