  • First words

    My first words acted as stepping stone to uplift me into the world. Literacy took it's own definition in my eyes in the coming years; I was so intrigued by the idea of reading and writing.
  • First book

    This was an incredibly important literacy moment in my life. My father had bought me a small book of nursery rhymes, which I treasured for years to come. This sparked my love for reading.
  • First day of K-12

    First day of K-12
    English was a fundamental class at our school. Our teachers were strict, and made sure we were the best we could possibly be with our literacy skills. It has contributed my overall literacy and who I am today.
  • Graduating High School

    Graduating grade school marked the end of an era of literacy development, and brought with it a great sense of accomplishment. It set me up for continuing to develop my literacy skills in college and life beyond that.
  • First day of College

    I studied a bachelor's in biology during college, and although literacy wasn't a critical area of study for me, it was still very necessary for me to understand the required curriculum. My literacy skills were further developed during college.
  • Arrival in the United States

    Coming to the U.S. uplifted my literacy skills to new levels. Being introduced to a new culture where English was the main language forced me to adapt a new lifestyle.
  • Getting familiarized with a new language

    It took quite a bit of effort to get acquainted with fluent English in the U.S. Although I had previous experience from grade school, communicating in English 24/7 took a bit getting used to. However, this set the foundation for my literacy skills today.
  • Birth of my daughter

    My daughter was my second child and her entrance into our family had a significant impact on my literacy. I had to be patient and understanding while she learned to read and write, regardless of the time it took.
  • First interview

    My first interview was the first test of my literacy skills. An interview setting put me on the spot, which put some pressure on me to perform well. The completion of the interview gave me a newfound confidence in my literacy abilities.
  • My first job as a teacher

    Becoming a teacher allowed me to touch the lives of students who may not have had the best literacy skills. While I taught them, I also learned alot myself. Helping those who may have been struggling with reading and writing was not only a significant moment in my career, but also furthering my literacy prowess.
