Steam power became popular and the production of items increased tenfold.   • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    Incident where soldiers from Britaiin fired on a crowd, killing 5 colonial Americans. This event led to the further escalation of the American Revolution, as people saw reason to revolt besides just unfairtaxation.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    A group of colonists threw over 10,000 shillings worth of tea into the Boston Harbor. This event remains an iconic event in American history. This Tea Party happened due to the Tea Act, which the colonists viewed as unfair. The British tried to respond to the Tea Party with more restricting acts, but the colonists of the Thirteen Colonies protested them over and over again.

    A war between the British and the people of the Thirteen Colonies, the American Revolution resulted in the freedom of the colonists and the start of a new nation. It also started a chain reaction of other revolutions, such as the one in France.

    Adopted by the thirteen colonies, The Declaration of Independance stated the North American colonies were independant. Instead they were now the United States of America. Thomas Jefferson wrote the document but a committee of men helped compose it.

    Siege of Yorktown
    The Siege of Yorktown was the last major battle in the American Revolution. Led by George Washington, the Continental Army triumphed over Cornwallis and the British. This surrender prompted the British to negotiate an end to this war. The result was the Treaty of Paris in 1783

    Dutch Patriot Revolt
    The patriots in the Netherlands wanted to decrease the power that the prince of Orange had. As the middle class grow in the Netherlands, there was an increase in demand for political changes within the government. This was also sparked because of sympathy for the American Revolution. They called themselves the "Free Corps" and forced more political reformations.

    This bloody war was started by the Third Estate in order to abolish the unfair gap in social groups and absolute monarchy. The revolutionaries won and maintained control for 4 years until Napoleon Bonaparte assumed control and reverted the nation back to monarchy.

    This was the symbolic start of the french revolution. The Bastille was a highly gaurded prison that symbolized royal authority. The governer was killed. Food riots soon became localized revolts. Patriots assumed power in place of many of local governments.
  • Haitian Revolution

    Haitian Revolution
    A slave revolt in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, the Haitian Revolution resulted in the beginning of the Haitian Republic and the emancipation of slavery. This was one of the most successful slave rebellions in the Americas and one of two, along with the American Revolution, to achieve independance from a European power, partly because France was occupied by Napoleon's endeavors.

    Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen
    This was a peampble to the consitution. The declaration granted freedom of religion, speech and media, equal taxation and established the idea of a soveirgn nation. It also led to many social and political debates regarding the equality of women, minorities, and slaves.
  • Decembrist Revolt

    Decembrist Revolt
    3,000 soldiers staged a revolt against Nicholas I to protect themselves from his conservatives views (the soldiers were liberal).They preferred Constantine over Nicholas but more importantly wanted a free country without the rule of a tsar. The revolt was suppressed by Nicholas and the soldiers were exiled or killed.

    After the 1830 uprising that overturned the resotred monarchyin France, Belgians rose up to declare their independance from Holland. In Poland and Italy, similar uprisings combining nationalism and a desire for self-governement failed.

    Grecian peasants fought for soveirgnty and against unfair taxation. This revolution came at a time when several other revolutions were happening in Europe. However, the Greek revoluton was significant because it was succesful. It had backing from two important countries- Britain and France. They supported Greek independence because they saw it as the root of all western civilization.

    The revolution that took place shifted from 1804 to 1833 with serbian people led to their soveirgnty from the Ottoman empire. This led to the developement of a constitutional monarchy and eventually modern Serbia.This also eventually led to more ethnic conflicts in the Balkans.
  • Northern Italian Revolution

    Northern Italian Revolution
    This revolution was organized before Italy became a unified country by intellectuals who wanted to be free from foreign rule, specifically Austrian rule. The revolution was led by the strongest city state, which was Piedmont. The revolt failed because of the strength of the Austrian army but it led to attempts later that unified Italy.

    Members of the middle class and workers united to overthrow the regime of Louis Phillippe and create the Second French Republic. Slavery was abolished in French colonies and adult men were given votign rights. Chaos broke out and people wanted a reestablishment of order, so the former emperor's nephew was elected.

    Sepoy Rebellion
    The Sepoy Revolution began among the army that the British used to control India, which was composed of Muslim and Hindus. The rebellion began when they found out that the bullets were greased with beef and pork fat which was against both religions. It was brutally supressed and is when Britain moved for greater control of India.
  • Taiping Rebellion

    Taiping Rebellion
    This was an enormous civil war in the south of China, led by Hong Xiuquan who called himself Jesus's little brother. It was incredibly significant for the massive amount of casualties, about 20 million people died, and laste for 14 years. The internal turmoil in China also allowed Western powers to easily gain more trading power and influence, establishing colonial bases in parts of China for raw materials and trade.
  • Independance of the Philipines

    Independance of the Philipines
    The revolution begane when Jose Rizal was arrested and executed for writing patriotic novels. Emilio Aguinaldo, leader of a secret society in the Philippines, revolted and proclaimed a republic in 1899. However, the U.S. went to war with Spain and took over the island. After years of violence the Philippines became a U.S. colnony and the first to be graned their independnce in the following years (1916).
