Porter's Timeline

  • Rodney King Riots

During this time havoc spread throughout the L.A. metropolitan area after a trial jury acquitted four Los Angeles Police Department officers for assault and use of excessive force. My father at the time was working in these parts that the riots were occurring and was sent home because the circumstances were becoming an unsafe working enviornment and was unable to return back to work for serveral days.
  • Northridge Earthquake

This earthquake was one of the highest ever instrumentally recordedin an urban area in North America, measuring 1.8g. My mom grew up living in these areas her whole life, but after this earthquake she decided that raising a baby where earthquakes are so common may not be the best place for them.
  • Moving to Arizona

After the riots and the earthquakes my parents decided to move to Arizona where there would never be any of that sort in these desert lands. At the age of four my dad was able to transfer jobs to Arizona.
  • Moving to Minnesota

The summer going into 8th grade my parents decided that we should move in Minnesota to be closer to family and for the great figure skating opportunities that they had to offer. My family and friends thought that there would be real potential for me in Minnesota so as a unit we thought it was a smart decision
  • Broken Ankle

The summer of 2007 I was training all day every day for the biggest figure skatign competition over summer before Regional Championship. I had never felt more prepared for this competition. Unfortunately, the day before the flight we were going throught our programs one more time in an exhibition and I over rotated a jump and my left ankle got caught in a cross fire. I thought that my season had come to an end, but 6 months and the support of my family I was back on the ice in no time
  • USFSA Collegiate Championship

This competition is only allowed for college student to compete amongest other colleges collegiate figure skating teams. I was fortunate enough to compete with some fellow friends attending ASU to represent at this comeptition. I finshed after both long and short programs in 6th place amongest over 25 competitors.
  • Joing Alpha Chi Omega

Coming into ASU as a freshman I had no intentions on joining a sorority, but over time I my grandmother made me reconsider my decision and I could never have been more thankful for that. Having the support from my family to choose the house of my own choice was something I am proud to be a part of.
  • Social Chair and Purchase Chair

After joining Alpha Chi Omega Freshman year I knew I wanted to hold some sort of position in the house before I graduated. I took on the positions of Social Chair which plans all of our social outings and date parties with other fraternities and also the Purchase Chair who designed all of our apparel. My family was very proud of me for taking on these very time consuming opportunites, but now I am able to reflect and see that I learned so much from this and very thankful for these choices.
  • Birthright program to Israel

I was givent the opportunity of a life time this summer to be choosen for the Birthright program through ASU to travel to Israel for 10 days to explore and learn about my home away from. The sights and memories I shared will never be replaced and I hope to one day be able to go back to this amazing place.
  • Receiving my own dog

This past summer my dad surprised me with my very own puppy. I had always wanted my own dog and now living in an apartment on my own he thought that I was responsible enough to take on another mouth to feed. At first I was beyond exciting and overwheled at the first time training the puppy, but now I look back and reflect on how thankful I am for my dad and knowing that I was mature enough to handle this bundle of joy.
