Erik Meyer's Personal Narrative Electronic Timeline

  • The birth of my younger sister.

After being an only child for my entire life, having another child in the family taught me that the world does not revolve around me. Previous to the birth of my sister, I was always the center of attention and controlled everything my parents ever did. This gave me a new perspective that there were greater things in the world than my well-being.
  • Breaking wrist BMX racing

When I was in 8th grade, I had a bad crash at a BMX national and ended up with a radial dislocation which caused me to loose feeling and function in half of my hand. After about 6 months of physical therapy I fully recovered, but it showed me how I am not invincible and how fragile one's well-being is. This taught me to enjoy being young and healthy.
  • Trip to Europe

The summer between freshman and sophmore year I traveled to Europe, Paris and London specifically, for my Aunt's wedding. This event gave me a perspective of the world that I had never seen before because before then, I had never left North America. This showed me how different other cultures are and how it creates vast differences in how people live their lives.
  • Becoming a liscenced driver

I got my liscence on my first try in March of 2015. Once I had my driver's liscence, I was given a freedom I had never experienced before since I had always been tethered to my parents as a source of transportaion. Suddenly, I could now go to the BMX track everyday if I wanted to just to ride for an hour or two. This freedom showed me how many ways you can approach life and how you can do almost anything you want to .
  • Training for BMX racing at the Olympic Training Center in California

I qualified to be one of the six kids to go train at the Olympic training center for a week along side olympic athletes and with the olympic coaches. This showed me how being something as great as an Olympic athlete is attainable with hard work and is something that is a major motivator for me today.
