You're going to need to take three sets of measurements. Girls you'll need bust, waist, and hip. Boys you'll need chest and waist. Look at the picture to see where those measurement need to be taken Remember the demonstration from class, keep the tape measure snug but not too tight. Record your measurements!
-
Now that you have your measurements you need to look at the pattern and pick the size closest to those measurements. If you're in between always round up rather than down. Take a look at this video for tips on picking out the right size, here, ignore the parts about going to the fabric store, we've already picked out our patterns.
-
Now that you have your size follow the column down to the view you chose. It'll tell you how much fabric you need. Record the amount then look at the Notions section at the bottom and see what your view needs in the way of buttons or zippers. Watch this video for help.
Note: When she says "project" in the video it's what we call "view". -
It's time to shop! We're taking a field trip to the fabric store today where I'll help you buy fabric and notions. Have your measurements with you and don't forget to bring your pattern!
-
You have to prep your pattern before you can cut out the fabric. Look at the list of pieces needed for your view and cut out those pieces.
-
On your pattern instructions there's a layout guide for pinning your pattern pieces to the fabric, follow it! As you pin keep pins perpendicular to the edge of the pattern piece. I'll be coming around to check on your pinning, Do not cut without approval from me!
-
After I've approved your pinning you can cut. Remember to cut along the lines of the pattern and keep your scissors on the table. Long even cuts to keep the edges straight. Cut out notches as you go.
-
Before you start sewing use the marking pencils to mark any circles, squares, or darts onto your fabric. I'll demonstrate in class how to transfer markings to your fabric.
