    Exploration of Africa

    Some of the firt few Portugese ships rounded the Cape of Good Hope in 1488, they wanted to gain a share of Arab trade. People that made their way south found contact with people that were hoping to be recued or tried to make their way northward towards Portugese settlements.

    Vespucci, Columbus, Vasco De Gamma, Magellan, Bougainville, Cook, La Perouse are all famous people because they went on long journeys across the ocean. Spices were transported for trade that made people get some wealth.

    A kingdom that emerged in present day Ghana. Osei Tutu was a militsry leader that won control of the trading city of Kumasi, then he conquered neighboring kingdoms and unified the Ashante kingdom. The Ashante defeat the Denkyera, a powerful neighboring enemy. They traded with Europeans on the coast and made themselves a wealthy power ful state.

    Arkwright found a way to speed up the process of making fabric. Ha made a machine that was based on clockwork, and it became a modern factory.
  • Arkwright's Water Frame

    Sir Richard Arkwright was a wig maker that became interested in spinning machinery. Arkwright began constructon on his first machine in 1769, it was called Arkwright's Water Frame because it operated on waterpower, and it produced a cotton yarn suitable for warp.
  • Evolutioin of Species

    Archaeology helped figure out our human ancestors and how we looked like in the past. This happened because scientists discovered early human ancestor fossils; neaderthals. Darwin published his Origin of Species book, the book was about how the long process of evolution, and the process of natural selection became known as "survival of the fittest".
  • Social Darwinism/Survival of the Fittest

    The idea of survival of the fittest was used in war and economic competition was kown as Social Darwinism. Social Darwinism increased the amount of racism because it made one racial group feel superior to the other.

    Countries that want to control lands beyoond their borders is called imperialism. One of the earliest colonizers of Africa was the Phoenicians, and they setup trading posts on the east ocast of the Mediterranean Sea. The Assyrians, the Persians, the Greeks, and the Romans had empires in the region later.
