Nikki Kaplowitz Illustrated Life Project

  • The Sister

The most important person who I love more than anyone else was born in Denton,Texas. I didn't meet her for four more years but since then we've been pretty much besties.
  • The Divorce

    The Divorce
My parents separated. I wasn't born yet but it effected myh life more than a lot of things that happened afterI was born. Livin large in two houses before I hit double digits.
  • The Birth

    The Birth
On this day my mother walked into some hospital in Austin at around 5:30pm. Some lady sergeon who didn't want to work on Halloween sliced open my mom and yanked me out while my mom slept. It was the most important event of the 21st century.
  • My second move

    My second move
Directly after I was born my mom moved my sister and I to Little Rock, Arkansas to live near her family. When I was three we moved back to Austin, to be clolser to my dad I guess.
  • The Elementary School

    The Elementary School
I started first grade at Kirby Hall School. It was my first time at a non-Montessori school. I stayed all through elementary school. That wasn't a good idea. (Can you find me?)
  • The Middle School

    The Middle School
This year I went from being a kid to a junior high kid, a private school kid to a public school kid, --I felt like I changed from--a girl to a woman. I made lots of friends and everything was really exciting. However, I couldn't handle it and I failed most of my classes for the first time in my life.
  • The Khabele School

    The Khabele School
Having failed most of my classes because of being depressed and overwhelmed at Kealing I transfered to a small "Liberal Arts" type school called Khabele. I was super excited to join this school that wanted me to feel free and self expressed. Middle schoolers had off campus privleges and highschoolers wanted to be my friend! I was excited.
  • The Best Year of My Life

The Best Year of My Life
This was the year, eigth grade, that I was the best Nikki I have ever been. I was super inspired, getting great grade, a Community Leader (student council at Khabele), on Honor Council, the head of the Pitso (Assembly) Commitee and just rocking at life in general. This was the year that I discovered being really busy with a lot of meetings and such made me happy.
  • This Barton Springs Experience

    This Barton Springs Experience
I was attending the night swim at Barton Springs with my friends and there were a bunch of hippies hanging out, hoolahooping, and playing guitars. We went to go check it out and a young man holding a large paper bag offered me a bite of a pastry . Being a conciencious and inteligent young 15 year old I declined his offer. He said something to me about missing out on life experiences because of fear. He has no idea that he changed my whole outlook on life. Now I say, "Yes" to life.
  • The Trip Abroad

    The Trip Abroad
After four long, hard months of fundraising, I finally flew to Costa Rica to begin my five month long, first ever trip abroad. I arrived in Alajuela in the late afternoon by Wendy Rockwell, my host mom. We drove five hours up the mountain to Monteverde. I played with my new little brothers, talked to my new mom, and sat awestruck, staring out the window at my new home.
  • The First Job

    The First Job
I got my first real, paycheck every two weeks, clock in and out kind of job at American Apperal. Woohoo!
  • The Change in Schools

    The Change in Schools
I have been at Khabele for what seems like my whole school career. Five year is a long time in the life of a teenager. This year I applied for my scholarship about two months late and lost it. I finally switched to Garza and couldn't be happier.
