Louis Farrakhan
Leader of the religious group Nation of Islam (NOI) and served as the minister of major mosques in Boston and Harlem, and was appointed by longtime NOI leader Elijah Muhammad as the National Representative of the Nation of Islam. -
Assistant
Fard chose Elijah Muhammad to be his assistant in 1931. After 3 years of training Elijah was made Minister. Shortly after, Fard disappeared without letting his followers know. Many other leaders soon stepped up, including Muhammad: the apprentice of Fard. -
Jailed
During World War II, Elijah Muhammad was jailed for being convicted of violating the Selective Service Act. Many other members were charged with similar acts because the NOI opposed to serving in the U.S. military. -
Movement
Elijah slowly built up his followers and made his movement statement clear to all: creating a separate society for black Americans. Religion of praising Allah, who believes blacks were his chosen people.
He reached out to the postwar decades for recruitment. -
Malcolm Little
The Nations of Islam attracted Malcolm Little while he was in prison in Boston for burglary from 1946-1952. He joined while he was doing his time in prison.
He quit smoking, eating pork, and gambling; meaning he was dedicated. -
Malcom X Begins Preaching for NOI
Many people were origionally alarmed by Malcolm X and the statements he made during the early period of his preaching. He and the Nation of Islam were described as violence-seekers, segregationists, and a threat to improved race relations. -
Malcom X Breaks Ties with NOI
Malcom left the NOI in 1964, in the weeks after he left the Nation of Islam, several Sunni Muslims encouraged Malcolm X to learn about their faith. He soon converted to the Sunni faith. Malcolm X flew to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as the start of his Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca obligatory for every Muslim who is able to do so. -
