    Napoleon leading his troops overthrew the directory and seized control of the French government. The directory was replaced with a consulate.

    After the coup, Napoleon formed the consulate which was a republic and named himself first consul, becoming like a dictator. From 1799 to 1804 Napoleon was first consul giving him most of the power.In 1802 Napoleon was elected consul for life. He supported laws that would strengthen the central government.

    Napoleon established the Banque of France to try to restore confidence in the banking system and keep the bank connected to the state. This helped to stabilize the French economy after the recession from the revolution.

    A vote of the people, plebiscite, happened to approve the new constitution and the majority voted to pass the constitution. The new constitution gave executive power to 3 consuls but the actual power was in the first consul which Napoleon was elected to.

    The lycee system of education was established by Napoleon and was a government-run public school. All male students of any background could attend the school. When students graduated they were appointed offices based on the merit ,"meritocracy," not by the backgrounds and money they came from.

    Napoleon set up a fair tax code where taxation would be more equal. He needed to raise money to help the economy and help get out of the recession from the revolution.

    The concordat restored the Catholic Church as the majority church in France but didn't let the church have any control in government affairs. The church agreed not to take back the lands it lost during the revolution. This gained Napolian support of the church and most of the french people.

    Napoleon sold all of the Louisiana territories to the United States for 15 million dollars. This gave him money to finance operations in Europe and gave power to the United States which would hopefully help rival the United States on the side of the French against England.

    In order to improve traffic and expand trade routes, he built new roads, bridges and canals.He also made improvements to the cities water supply and sewer system.

    Napoleon encouraged new industries especially French luxury which gave people employment and boosted the economy. To help do this, he banned imported Indian muslin and encouraged French silk to be used in fancy garments. This was one way that he tried to build up the economy by using only what they produced in French farms and factories.

    The Napoleonic code was a system of laws established by Napoleon that gave the country a uniform set of laws. This was one of his most notable accomplishments. The most important part of the code gave equality before the law for all citizens and abolished what was left of feudalism. Citizens were also given the right to choose their own profession.

    Napoleon desired to make himself emperor and had the support of the French people. At the coronation, he took the crown from the pope and put it on his head, giving the impression that he was more powerful than the church.

    Napoleon trapped the entire Austrian army to force its surrender near the city of Ulm. This was a strategic victory with no major battle or bloodshed. Napoleon's strategy was to confuse and then trap the Austrians quickly before the Russians could arrive to help them. Napoleon and his grand army were successful.

    This was another extremely tactical battle by Napoleon Bonapart. This battle was also known as the Battle of 3 Emperors and is known as the most important battle of all of the Napoleonic wars. Napoleon and his army defeated the Austro -Russian army. He used keen military strategy and tricked the two armies never showing his next moves.

    In the late 1700s and early 1800s Jews were prosecuted throughout Europe. Napoleon decided to change that and In France, the Jews became citizens. Napoleon believed in religious equality and made it so that Judaism was an acceptable religion to practice in France.

    In 1814, after Napoleon surrendered and was forced to give up his throne, he was exiled to the island of Elba. Shortly after being exiled, he heard rumors that the new king, was very unpopular among the people. He realized this was his chance so he escaped Elba and went back to France where he was welcomed by the crowds. He quickly regained control of the army and within days he was once again the emperor of France.

    On May 5th, 1821 the most brilliant military strategist of all time passed away. He will forever be known for his lasting positive contributions to not only France, but all of Europe as well. He instilled nationalism through Europe and today the code Napoleon is still the basis of law in France, some of Europe and in the state of Louisiana. Napoleon also laid the basis for equality and European solidarity.
