  • Napoleon is declared First Consul

    3 Nov 1799 The Coup d’état established Napoleon as First Consul of France. Napoleon became the most powerful.
  • Napoleon's coup d'etat, overthrowing the Directory

    November 9–10, 1799 overthrew the system of government under the Directory in France and substituted the Consulate, making way for the despotism of Napoleon Bonaparte. The event is often viewed as the effective end of the French Revolution.
  • Napoleon is declared Emperor’

    May 18, 1804 Napoleon proclaimed himself emperor, and made Josephine Empress. His coronation ceremony took place in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris, with incredible splendor and at considerable expense.
  • Battle of Trafalgar

    21 Oct 1805 Napoleon decided to renew war with Britain in May 1803, therefore he sent his armies to the French ports on the Channel and began to make preparations to invade England. Great Britain remained dominant on the seas. When Napoleon brought his fleet to northern France, a combined French and Spanish fleet was annihilated by Lord Nelson. Therefore, the invasion of England was impossible.
  • The Continental System is implemented

    3 Jul 1807 After Napoleon defeated the Russians, he negotiated a treaty with Alexander of Russia. Alexander agreed that if the British continued war against France, Russia would join the Continental System of blockades and isolate Britain economically. This led to a realignment of alliances.
  • Napoleon is defeated in Russia

    3 Dec 1812 Napoleon and his huge army marched to Moscow. As the Russian army retreated, they destroyed or carried off anything that might be useful. As they retreated from Moscow, they set it on fire. Napoleon had counted on restoring his troops there during the long, harsh winter, but it was found desolate.

  • Napoleon is exiled to Elba

    4 Apr 1814 After Napoleon abdicated his throne, the victorious allies gave Napoleon the island of Elba as his own state. Elba was a tiny island off the coast of Italy. Napoleon was allowed to keep his title, and France was required to pay him 2 million francs yearly.
