    Only Great Britain and Russian remained undefeated by Napoleon. Since the French couldn't defeat the British navy, he treid to obtain victory in a different way. He forbade the countries in his empuire to trade with Great Britain, which he called a 'nations of shopkeepers'. His order was hard to enforce and proved unsuccessful.

    Napoleon organized a Grand Army of about 600,000 soldier of different nationalities. It was the largest army the world had yet seen. Instead, they reatreated, drawing the French deeper into Russia. As the Russians retreated, they burned their villages and food supplies leaving nothing for the French.

    Napoleon reached Moscow. The city caught fire and three thourths was destroyed. They had neither food nor shelter.

    The bitter Russian winter had starteed. Hundreds of thousands of French soldiers froze to death. Temperatures dropped to under 40 degrees below zero. Thousands more died from disease and lack of food.

    Napoleon quickly raised another army, though new soldiers were not trained well. They were defeated by the allied forces of Austira, Prussia, Russia, and Great Britain. This was the first time the four coumtries had joimed togerther to fight Napoleon.
