Napoleon was commisioned as a lieutenant in the French army when he graduated. At age 16, he had already become a second lieutenant.

Napoleon rose quickly throught the ranks and gained fame by fighting supporters of the king. He studied philosphies and famous military campaigns.

Napoleon won a series of battles in Italy using the speed, suprise, and decisive action (the qualities he became famous for). He defeated the armies of the Papal States and their Austrian allies, giving France control of Northern Italy.

At the age of 30, Napolean returned to Paris and seized control of France in a 'coup d'etat' (military takeover) on November 11 1799. Afterwards, a new constitution was introduced and Napoleon was made First Consul of France. In theory, the Consul was supposed to be a republic, but in fact, Napoleon held all the power.

He also created the Napoleonic code in this year, and began military campaigns to expand the empire. He was 35 when he crowned himself Emperor.

When Napoleon began losing battles, his people began to turn against him, and he was sent into exile.

NApoleon suffered his wporst defeat ever by the combined armies of Britain and Prussia, and the victors exiled him a second time, to island Saint Helena.

Napoleon died of stomach cancer on the island Saint Helena. Though he died, his legacy is still remembered almost everywhere today.
