Carlo Buonaparte was appointed assessor of the judicial district of Ajaccio in 1771, after he switched his allegiance to the French. This job was able to help him enroll his two sons, Napoleon & Joseph in France's College d'Autun.

Back home, Napoleon got behind the Corsican resistance to the French occupation, Napoleon had sided with his father's former ally, Pasquale Paoli. After, Napoleon & his dad soon had a fallout, and then a civil war broke out in Corsica in April 1793. Napoleon became an enemy of Paoli, and his family was forced to relocate to France, and they decided to use the French version of their last name. Their new last name was Bonaparte.
