    + Radio in the Classroom
Once a week, we would listen to the Standard Oil Broadcasts featuring National Parks. We would listen for one hour per week, during which time we were allowed to draw whatever we wanted. It was the most relaxing and "creative" lesson I had in school at that time.

    +Television in the bedroom
I was moved into my own bedroom and I had my own television set. I watched hundreds of hours of: Father Knows Best, Leave it to Beaver, The Donna Reed Show, Lucy, My Three Sons, Bonanza. There were no restrictions on my viewing time.
  • - President Kennedy Shot

    - President Kennedy Shot
While in the 7th grade, we were informed that President Kennedy had been shot and killed. Our substitute art teacher turned on the radio and played funereal music while telling us that we could be attacked by a foreign power at any time. I hated that music (and the radio too) and was scared and confused.

    + Learning to Type
Sitting in long rows of desks with typrewriters, I learned to type with 40 other students. While not planning to be a secretary, which some of my peers were considering, I did not know that learning to type would one of the greatest skills I now possess in my professional and personal technology life.

    - Access to College Science
After gaining admission to the University of California, Berkeley with two years of high school math, I visited the Physiology Department on campus to find out how to become a major. I was turned away due to my lack of mathematics preparation and was pointed to the History department.

  • The Great Computer Debate

    The Great Computer Debate
Among my friends (30 somethings) there was a lot of discussion regarding the purchasing of a desktop computer. I was a nay-sayer, thinking that everyone was just going along with the crowd, rather than thinking through a technology tool decision. I was wrong.
  • +Purchasing Desktop Computer for Home Use

A desktop computer was available at home for family use: two parents, one 8 year old, one 3 year old.
  • + The Confidence of a Problem Solver

A huge technological advance for me was having texting. I was able to communicate better and more frequently with my two children, nieces, and friends.
  • + Purchasing My First Laptop Computer

+ Purchasing My First Laptop Computer
Retiring from full time teaching and administration, I purchased my first laptop so that I could bring my computer to all of my new jobs. I could also work outside, which was a great new opportunity.
  • - Dropping Laptop on the Floor

When my laptop fell on the floor and crashed, I learned the value of backing up my system. The repair people could save my hard drive, but not the motherboard. A new computer must be purchased. Sigh.
  • +Purchasing a New Laptop

Lesson learned; don't tangle up in the charging cord. It results in a laptop on the floor, irreparible. Lesson learned; back up computer as often as possible.
