My Life in Movies

  • Peter Pan

    Peter Pan

I tend to correlate this movie with my mother. I've always viewed Wendy as if she was my mom because she has loved that movie for as long as I can remember. I can’t watch this movie without thinking about all of the times I watched it with my family growing up.
  • High School Musical 3

    High School Musical 3

While this movie isn’t being used for my high school years, it did give me unreasonably high expectations for those four years. I first saw this movie while I was in elementary school, and I was ready for my high school experience to be great and full of fun people, but it didn’t go as planned.
  • Annie

    Annie

The scene at the beginning of the movie when Annie is comforting the other girl reminds me of my relationship with my sister. We both comforted each other a lot growing up since we were two girls against my two brothers (who could get really annoying) We also just had that bond that we didn’t share with our brothers. It sometimes felt like it was us against the world.
  • Bolt

    Bolt

The scene in Bolt when Penny was crying over losing Bolt reminds me of all of my lost childhood pets. I’ve lost a few pets growing up- sometimes it was because we had to put them up for adoption, and sometimes they just didn’t make it. Either way, I can relate to the heartbreak of losing a close companion.
  • The Sandlot

    The Sandlot

The setting in this movie reminds me of when I was a kid and I would go outside and play for hours. It took place before I was born, but like the kids in the movie, I spent a lot of time outside with my siblings. We would keep ourselves occupied with the other kids in our neighborhood playing games that never really ended, just rolled over until the next time we saw each other.
  • Tangled

    Tangled

I personally really connected to Rapunzel in this movie. She spent a lot of her time inside (which applied more as I was growing up). She also likes painting, which inspired me to do the same. And although I wasn’t always like her, I really wanted to be. She’s passionate, determined, and seemingly fearless. She always sees the best in people, which is an admiral trait to have, and doesn’t always come easy.
  • Night at the Museum

    Night at the Museum

When my older brother was still in boy scouts his troop and their families got to stay the night in the Boston Children’s Museum. Before we did that though, my siblings and I watched the movie, and we made jokes about the exhibits coming alive while we slept. They didn’t, but I can’t watch this movie without thinking about that unique experience.
  • Rise of the Guardians

    Rise of the Guardians

Okay, so bear with me. This title might be a bit of a stretch, but as I was growing up, my parents divorced and then later had a string of significant others. So, Rise of the Guardians can be a way to describe the stream of adults that have come in and out of my life but were briefly in charge of my well-being.
  • The Hunger Games

    The Hunger Games

This movie took place primarily in the woods, which made me nostalgic for all of the times my siblings and I would build things in the woods- both physical things and a safe space where we could do whatever we wanted, without having to worry about the adults.
  • The Imitation Game

    The Imitation Game

“Sometimes it is the people who no one imagines anything of who can do the things that nobody can imagine.” This quote really impacted me when I first heard it. Not necessarily because I think I’m destined for greatness, but because it opened my eyes to the potential of everyone around me. I like this quote because it gives everyone around me a whole other layer of something that I can’t quite name.
  • It

    It

“I will take him only him and I will have my long rest and you will all live to grow and thrive and lead happy lives until old age takes you back to the weeds” This quote doesn’t really have any real meaning to me, except that I can recite it from memory as it comes up in the movie. Though I like this scene in the movie since it’s the “final” showdown between the Losers and Pennywise, which is always fun to watch.
  • To All the Boys I've Loved Before

To All the Boys I've Loved Before

Another setting! I watched this movie right before everything in my life started to change. It was the calm before the storm. This movie takes place during the character’s time in high school (which, in case you didn’t know, I am currently living through). Though the social environment of the school in the movie isn’t the same as mine, it reminds me of what high school can be like.
  • Love, Simon

    Love, Simon

“You get to exhale now, Simon.” This is probably the only time I have ever really shed a tear while watching a movie. At this time in my life, I wasn’t in the best place, so this quote really hit me. I’m not going into much detail, but let’s just say that I really needed to hear that. I don’t think people get told that enough. That they don’t have to try so hard or be as strong as they think they need to be, and I think we need to spread that message more often.
  • Coraline

    Coraline

Okay, so this part is dedicated to the Other Mother. The villain of this particular movie. The one who thinks that everything has to go her way, or else she loses her temper. She’s super manipulative, but Coraline doesn’t notice it at first because everything seems too good to be true. I’ve known a couple of people like that. Thankfully, most of them quickly exited my life, but there is one person I can’t quite get rid of, and she is quite literally the Other Mother.
  • The Darkest Minds

    The Darkest Minds

This final movie is based entirely on the title. The Darkest Minds. I’ve actually read the books this movie was based on, but the content isn’t what I’m basing this off of. Let’s just say, that my mind can get pretty dark sometimes (which I think is normal at this point).
