My life: 1850-1880

  • The Birth of John

    The Birth of John
Today my wife had our first born. He was born at around three o'clock in the morning. My wife passed away during the birth. I think that I will call him John. John's birth has become both a blessing and a curse.
  • The passing of John

After only twenty-three months of life, my only son has passed away. Now I have lost both my wife and my child within two years. I suppose his death should not have been a surprise considering how sick he was, but it still hurts just as much
  • Moving to London

I have decided to move. I know that now is not a good time in the year to make a trip but I can't take another day here. I am going to move to London Ontario because I have heard that it is an important political city, and I do not think that I will have a difficult time finding work, being a capable man with the skills of a tailor.
  • Arriving in London

I have finally arrived! I never expected the trip to take this long to travel from Nova Scotia and to be as difficult as it was with the cold winter weather at first and the lack of good transportation, but I am here at last and I intend to start a brand new successful life here.
  • The new Job

    The new Job
I just got a job doing the alterations for a suit that belongs to John Taylor Jr, a very wealthy man with some powerful political connections. If I do well on this job, Taylor might end up recommending my services to others.
  • Finishing the Job

If I do say so myself, I did a splendid job on Taylor's suit. He payed me handsomely which I take to be a sign that he was very happy with my work. My lif is taking quite a positive turn, hopefully this keeps up!
  • Opening the Shop

I have decided to open up my very own workshop with the extra money I have been making recently! I am very excited because this will allow me to work much more effectively than before in the house.
  • Hiring Patrick

    Hiring Patrick
Today a man named Patrick cam to the shop asking for work. He showed me his tailoring skills and I decided to hire him. He did not ask for very much. He explained that he had moved from the East Coast, and before that lived in Ireland.
  • Turning 24

Today is my twenty-fourth birthday. The people I have mentioned it to have congratulated me on my health and have hoped me many more years of the same.
  • Anniversary of Death

Today marks five years without my beloved wife, I still miss her every day.
  • The Apprentice

Business has been so successful lately that I am now apprenticing a boy named Daniel. He hasn't given me much information about himself, but I don't mind. One thing I do know is that he is an orphan. He is bright and a hard worker, so I like him.
  • Moving the Shop

I have decided to purchase a new shop, one where I am able to live above, so that I do not have to make the early morning and late night trips to and from the shop. The weather can get quite cold in the winter and this new shop also has more floor space, which gives the potential to possibly hire Daniel after his apprenticeship
  • Addopting Daniel

I have addopted Daniel! The other day it occured to me that Daniel is only a few years older than poor John would be now and Daniel's apprenticeship has been such a success and he seems to enjoy my company so much, so I suggested it. Daniel was so pleased!
  • The Robbery

Just when things were going so well, our shop was robbed! The thieves cleaned out our entire cash box, and neither Daniel nor I heard a thing! My guess is that Patrick forgot to lock the front door when he left late last night after finishing a jacket, and the thieves walked right in.
  • Patrick Disapears

Patrick has Disapeared, and I have the strong susspicion that he won't be coming back. It seems likely to me now that Patrick was the one who stole all of our money last week. I can't believe I trusted him! If I ever get my hands on him, he will wish he never met me!
  • Meeting George Brown

    Meeting George Brown
Today I was introduced to one of John Taylor's aquantinces, George Brown. George is a popular Liberal politician.
  • Working for Brown

Today Mr. Brown came to the shop and explained to me that he had some very important campaining and political meetings coming up and that he needed some adjustments made to his suits. This is a very exciting oppourtunity because if I do a good job now, he may recommend me to his wealthy associates.
  • The Official Liberal Tailor?

    The Official Liberal Tailor?
I have now Tailored many of Brown's suits, and he has been quite happy with every job I have done. I have also decided to pay more attention to politics, especially the Liberal strategy, and have decided that I do not agree with them. Anyway, Brown came to the shop today and asked me to consider working full time tailoring for only the members of the Liberal party. I have been assured that the income will be far more than what I earn now, but morally how can I work with a cause I disagree with?
  • Finally, success

It has now been over a year since I took the job tailoring for the Liberals, and I don't regret it in the least. Daniel is still happily running the shop, and money is plentiful. Things are looking up for us.
  • Professional Progress

I have found that when one has alot of money, they have better oppourtunities to make even more money. Recently I have been able to purchase higher quality, more expensive supplies and have been able to replace some of my old tools and machines with more efficient, higher quality versions.
  • Daniel's Birthday

Today Daniel turned 16. It reminded me of what John might have looked like now, if he was still alive. John would have been twelve years old.
  • Working with Liberals

At this point I believe I have met every member of the Liberal Party personaly and have tailored all of their clothing. No one has complained about my work as of yet but I still do not agree with their beliefs. The pay is so generous though that I know I can't quit.
  • Arguing with Brown

Today while talking to George Brown I voiced my opinion to him regarding the seeparation of Upper and Lower Canada and how I did not agree with it. This made him very angry and he told me that if I wanted to think that way I should go work for the Conservatives.
  • Going to Charlettown

It has now been a year since I first voiced my political opinions to George Brown, and my opinion has not changed in the least. Long ago George apologized for the way he spoke to me that day and yesterday he asked me if I would like to attend a trip to Charlottown along with the other party members regarding confederation. George has said the meeting is very important and I am inerested in hearing what both parties have to say to each other.
  • Period: to

    John A. MacDonald

The conference was such an incredible exerience! I was able to hear what John A. MacDonald had to say about so many different things, and I agreed with him on everything! If this land really does seerate itself from Britain he is the man I want to represent me. I used to think that Mr. Brown was a good speaker, but Mr. MacDonald talked circles around him and made him very indignnt in the process. Once we get back to London, I am going to quit.
  • Meeting Mr. MacDonald

    Meeting Mr. MacDonald
Today I had a conversation with John A. Macdonald. After I told him how much I aggreed with his opionions regarding the integration of Upper and Lower Canada and the confederation of Canada, he offered me a job tailoring the clothes of the Conservatives, instead of the Liberals and assured me of a pay raise. Of course I was thrilled! Tomorrow I will travel back home and then Daniel and I will sell the shop and move to Quebec city, where the Conservatives and Mr. MacDonald work most of the time.
  • October Conference

John invited me to attend another political conference this month in Quebec city, although I had to decline in order to prepare for our move to Queebec
  • Quebec City

Daniel and I have finally arrived in Quebec City! It took longer than I excpected to sell the shop, but in the end I am very satisfied with the price I sold it for.
  • Enjoying Life

Life is going so well! Daniel is happy, the Conservatives are happy with my work, and money is plentiful! What a change from fourteen years ago.
  • Working with Conservatives

    Working with Conservatives
It has now been over a year worrking with the Conservatives, and it is so much more enjoyable than working with the Liberals! I have opened a new shop that Daniel runs successfully and I occasionally help out there too. The Conservatives are so much more friendly than the liberals and appreciate my work so much more
  • London Conference

Today John invited me attend a very important political conference in none other than London Ontario. I have been very busy lately with work and have not been paying much attention to politics, but John assured me that it is very important to the confederation of Canada. This will be the first time that I see George Brown since I quit two years ago.
  • Daniel Meets a Girl

Daniel introduced me to his girlfriend yesterday. Her name is Isabella and she is a seamstress in the town beside ours.
  • Daniel Gets Engaged

Daniel proposed to Isabella yesterday and she accepted! I am very happy for Daniel although his upcoming marriage makes me think about my wife. The marriage is scheduled for next year.
  • Daniel Gets Married

Today Daniel married Isabella and in the fourteen years I have known him I have never been more prod of him.
  • Isabella Works at the Shop

Isabella has quit her other job and come to work at hte shop. This is great news for Daniel and I because now our shop specializes in both men's and woman's clothing
  • Celebrating Christmas

Today has been an excellent day. We celebrated Christmas with Isabella's family at their home and the day was splendid.
  • My Anniversary

    My Anniversary
Today would have been my 25th wedding anniversary. I miss my wife so so much...
  • Travelling to Nova Scotia

Daniel, Isabella and I are going to travel back to the town where I grew up in Nova Scotia. The Trip will take the better part of a year but I hope it will help me to let go of the pain I still feel from losing John and my wife.
  • Isabella's big annouuncement

Today I was working in the shop with Daniel and Isabella, and Isabella told me that she was pregnant. I am so happy for her but at the same time am so scared that the same thing that happened to me will happen to Daniel.
  • Becoming a Grandparent

Today Isabella had baby girl, and they named her Anne, after my wife. The name took me completely by surprise, and broght me to tears. Tears of joy though, not sadness. There will be no more tears of sadness.
  • Anne's first Birthday

Today Anne had her first birthday.
  • Quitting my Job

Today, after thirteen years of work with the Conservatives, I quit my job to work at the shop and to help look after Anne. Everyone in the Party was sad to see me leave, and as a gift to me they gave to me a solid silver stitching needle.
  • Another Grandchild on the Way

Daniel told me today that Isabella is pregnant with another child. I am so happy for them and the family that they are creating.
  • Christina is Born

Today Isabella had her second child and they named her Christina.
  • The Fire

    The Fire
Written by Daniel There was a devastating fire yesterday at the shop, and it ruined my life. My father was working at the back of the shop and did not even realize that there was a fire until he was completely trapped. There was nothing anyone could do to save him.
