My Hero Project

  • Subway Story

    Subway Story
I learned about Wesley Autrey saving a man's life at a subway station. Although his action was heroic, Wesley did not come off as a hero to me. Wesley seemed like a lucky guy at the right time and right place to save a life.

Why Courage Matters by John McCain and Self Thought
During class, we answered questions about our own opinions on heros. My definition is a hero is someone who willingly risks or injures his life to save another being in need of help. Afterwards, Mrs. Allen read to the class about Roy Benavidez, a war hero, risking his life in order to save his fellow troops in Vietnam. Roy did fit my hero description, but the military is not my kind of hero. I don't want a hero who used violence in order to fufill his heroic task.
  • Interview

I watched an interview between Mrs.Simmons and Kristi Quillen, a Peace Corps volunteer. This is when I decided that I wanted to have a hero similar to Kristi. I guess she inspired me to be like her, someone who peacefully gives up her time to spend it on those in need.
  • Heroes in Literature

    Heroes in Literature
I discussed among a group of four on an excerpt from a novel trying to decide if the character is a hero or the author is the hero. This was very strange for me because, I have never imagined the author to be the hero instead of the book character. For example, Harper Lee is the hero instead of the book character, Atticus Finch. Harper uses Atticus Finch to voice her opinions and thoughts.
  • My Hero

    My Hero
I decided on my hero to be Mother Teresa for all her work in helping the poor and needy. As I read a short story of her biography, I felt the same "inspirational feeling" when I was listening to Kristi. They both willingly give up all their time to aid the needy.
  • Library

I have picked up my autobiography, and signed into all the needed websites for this project.
  • Research

I began to research on Mother Teresa and picked out a book source and a few website sources.
  • Hero Groups

We were given a list of heroes and put them into different categories. I learned that there can be political, artistic, and even visionary heroes. Before this day, I had a very narrowed hero description. Now, with this new knowledge of different categories of heroes, I am not even sure how to start describing a hero in general.
  • Blog post 1

I wrote a blog post on why I chose my hero. To my suprise, this actually helped me find out that I have a desire to do something as compassionate as Mother Teresa with helping and loving the unfortunate others.
  • Fixing the World

    Fixing the World
Today we listened to a few songs on their opinion on how we should change the world. The Year of the Rat and the Liberty Mutual Insurance both set a chain of kindness/love for each other to help make the world more peaceful. However, John Mayer's song seemed pessimistic and slightly depressing and he voiced his opinions on how we "can't beat the system" and the song "All ya need to do" explained how there simply isn't one solution to help. My own opinion is that we all should equally contribute.
  • Powerful Youth

    Powerful Youth
Today we heard songs on what the youth should be doing to help the society. Both songs voiced their belief on taking action and proving the older society that we can help the world. I totally agree with them.
  • Heroes in Books

    Heroes in Books
Mrs. Wade came to class to help make the interview process more smoother to do. Afterwards, the class worked together to name (shout) book titles that contain a heroic character. Nothing really impacted me during this exercise, because the heroes in literature already did that.
  • Blog Post 2

I wrote my second blog post for posterous. This time, I described my evolution from a child to now on how I view heroes. I feel like I was so naive about heros only a few weeks ago. This project is actually doing some good for me.
  • Sharing

Today I heard passages from the autobiographies of my fellow classmates' heros. I still believe that my hero is better. :)
