He was ejected off a train their and that sparked his desire for Indian rights.

    In 1906, the Transvaal government promulgated a new Act compelling registration of the colony's Indian population. At a protest meeting held in Johannesburg on September 11th Gandhi adopted his methodology of satyagraha, or nonviolent protest, for the first time, calling on his fellow Indians to defy the new law and fight for their rights. This protest lead to many more sparking a bad time for Indians, being jailed and dieing. (Clement)
