The british were smuggling Opium (drug) into China for non medical use. Over a long period of time 12 million chinese people were addicted. The british refused to stop smuggleing which led to a war at sea. Britian had a strong navy so they conquered China easily. China signed the treaty of Nanjing after the depressing conquer.

Comodore Perry brought a letter to Japan from President Fillmore, asking Japan to trade. He said he would come back later with a large fleet for their reply. They signed this treaty, opening two more ports and allowing US to set up an embassy in Japan.
