    Autumn Harvest Uprising
    Mao led an army of peasants to fight off the Kuomintang and Hunan landlords because the KMT (a political party) was a republican party while the CCP was a communist one. During 1927-1948, the KMT ruled China and the CCP intended to overthrow it with a troop of peasants. They failed, then retreated to the Jiangxi province. The CPP then started using the guerilla tactics in order to fight back.
  • Long March

    Long March
    The Kuomintang leader, Chiang Kai Shek ordered an attack on Mao ZeDong and the CCP. They escaped. The communist army travelled 6,000 miles for the relocation of a new CCP headquarters.

    People's Republic of China Founded
    People’s Republic of China FoundedAfter years of the civil war, the CCP finally won against the KMT. They then held authority over the entire nation, which resulted the KMT to retreat to another state, Taiwan.

    New Marriage Law Established
    This law gave the legal equality between men and women to have the freedom for filling a divorce, purchasing concubines, demolishing polygamy and the prohibition of child marriages.

  • Anti Five Campaign

    Five Anti Campaign launched. A campaign aimed at purging unwanted elements in China. The five stated evils were theft of state property, bribery, cheating on government contracts, tax evasion and lastly, stealing any economic information. Targeted more towards business owners and landlords.
  • A Hundred Flowers Campaign

    This campaign was led by Mao to bring the voices of the opinions and ideas of the intelligentsia in helping to advance China. Mao had said “Let a Hundred flowers bloom, let a hundred schools of thought contend”.
  • Great Leap Forward

    Great Leap Forward
    Mao announced a second Five Year plan for China. His goal was develop the industry and agriculture. Eventually, this caused a massive famine.

    Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution Begins
    The Cultural Revolution lasted for a decade long, resulting in an estimated death toll of up to 2 million Chinese people. Mao’s objective was to destroy all traditional Chinese culture and present a classless society.

    Ping pong diplomacy with US
    An American Ping-Pong team received a unexpected invitation from China. This invitation was one of the signal of the improving relations between US and China. The visit was highly publicized, including inviting along 10 journalists and a few other Americans to come along. At the same day, the US announced removing the 20-year embargo trade with China.

  • Mao's Demise

    Mao's Demise
    Mao died due to multiple organ failure, and left the Gang of Four to struggle for power which included Mao’s widow, Jiang Qing.
  • The Arrest of "Gang of Four"

    The Arrest of "Gang of Four"
    Yao Wenyuan, Jiang Qing (wife of Mao), Zhang Chunqiao and Wang Hongwen apprehended. They were blamed for the worst outcomes of the societal chaos in the Cultural Revolution. After this, celebrations throughout China marked the end of Mao’s era.
