Major Events under Mao's Rule

  • The Marriage Reform Law

    This law banned forced marriages. The law stated, "All marriages are to be based on the free consent of men and women." DIvorce then became a lot easier. If you broke any of these laws, the penalty was severe.
  • The Agrarian Reform Law

    Mao passed this law in 1950. Animals, machinery and land were given to the peasants. The landlords began to become fearful for their safety. But the peasants were no longer treated as unfarily as everyone else.
  • China involved in Korean War

    China became involved in the Korean War in 1950. As a result of entering the war, the government came up with its "Three Antis Campaign". This campaign was against corruption, waste and bureaucracy. Those who broke the law could be shot.
  • Five Antis Campaign

    This followed the "Three Antis Campaign". This was against bribery, non-payment of taxes, fraud, taking government property and spying. Those who broke the law, got sent to prision, rather than being shot.
  • The First Five Year Plan

    This was a plan to attempt to tackle steel, coal and iron productions.
  • Great Leap Forward

    This was an econimic and social campain by the Communist party of China. The campaign was lead by Mao. The goal was to transform the country from an agrarian economy into a communist society. It ended in 1961, resulting in tens of millions of deaths.
  • Split with the Soviet Union

    The split of China and the Soviet Union is also called the Sino-Soviet split. The split was the worsening of political and People's Republic of China and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics during the Cold War. These were both communist communities. The Sino-Soviet split was one of the key events of the Cold War. The split helped to determine the framework of the Second Cold War.
  • Cultural Revolution

    This was when Mao attempted to reassert his authority over the Chinese government. Millions of people suffered wide ranges of abuse including public humiliation, imprisonment without trial, torture, and harassment. Mao declared this horro over in 1969.
